# Video Files

Hi. I have a 6.9 MB .wmv file that I need to post to my site. Where should I start? What format should I convert it to be compatable with most browsers? There is also a google vid and a youtube vid that I will have to post, but I want to tackle this one first.

Hi Doty,
I’m in a similar situation as you. We’ve got a little digital video
recorder that saves files as .AVI. Folks tell me that Flash is the
best way to go with videos, but I only have access to QuickTime Pro
and iMovie. I do have the Adobe Creative Suite 3, but only the Design
Basic (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator & Acrobat). The video
recorder we have is cheap, but seems to work well (it’s called
FlipVideo). Our local radio station would like to put an occasional 2
or 3 minute video online, say of an important town hall meeting or
severe weather. I would think the problem with QuickTime is that not
enough PC users would have that installed on their systems? Is Flash
the best way to go for online video? I hope you get an answer to our
question, Doty, as I need the same help.

In terms of ease of viewing across Macs and PCs, Flash video is
definitely the right solution now. In terms of best quality,
QuickTime is still the premier choice.
Everyone who has an iPod will have QuickTime on the computer they use
with that iPod, as that’s a core part of iTunes. But Flash is still
far more ubiquitous.
What would make life really easy for you is the Flash CS3 Video
Encoder, but that’s only available as part of Adobe’s CS3 Web Premium
set, I believe.

Hi Keith. I ran it through the Flash CS3 Video Encoder. I must have done
something wrong. It won’t play either in that or in the Flash Player. It
won’t import into FreeWay either. Any clues?

That encoder saves FLV files (Flash Video). These need to be passed
to a Flash (SWF) movie “player” as a variable. The FLV themselves
cannot be played back in a browser.

MPEG Streamclip is great for converting video files - and it’s free. I use it for turning material (both audio and video) from my PVR and from EyeTV on the Mac into QT files, as well as MPEG videos for burning to DVD. The menu includes the option of turning wmv files into AVI.
It’s worth downloading from [here](http://www.squared5.com/) and having a play with it. Think of it as the equivalent of Graphic Converter.
One tip - you need to open the file you want to convert through the MPEG Streamclip menu - dragging the file on to the Streamclip icon did not work for me. And apologies if I’m telling you something you are already aware of. 🙂

Make that [http://www.squared5.com](http://www.squared5.com) without the fiddle of trying to
hide the URL by applying it to a word and it’ll be even more
universally clickable. (Walter, your example is raw unlinked text in
my client.)
AND it will let people see the URL themselves. I mistrust links that
are masked like this in my email; it is one of the classic spammer
tricks.

I never use ‘shortcuts’ in email for that reason, but got used to doing it on other forums, initially when it was a long URL, and the habit stuck! But good point, I’ll try to stop using them on URLs like that which really don’t need them 😉
And, waltd, mine was more clickable than wot yours was 😃
I should add I have no connection with Squared5 except as a happy user.

I have the wma file converted to flv. But I am really stumped how to get the
flv to a swf file. I used visual hub to make my flv file.
At first, I made a swf file directly (via VisualHub), but I want the video
to have play and pause buttons and the documentation said I had to convert
to flv and then use something else to get it to swf. How do I do this?
