Viewing a PDF file in a new window

It should really be quite simple I suppose, but I struggle with it for many months now !
What I want is simple: I place graphic icon on a page, and then, when the visitor clicks that icon, the idea is that the PDF document opens in a new window in the browser, and one can view all the pages from the document !
I’ve seen this on numerous sites but I can’t make it work ??

Would somebody please help ?

There’s an Action for this. It’s in FW Pro and I assume FW Express,
too. Select your graphic and go to ‘Item’ in the menu bar and select
'Actions. You will see listed ‘Graphic Link to PDF’. Choose this and
in the Action Pallet select the file you want to be displayed/
downloaded and for ‘If displayed’, select New Window.

It is a user codition as to whether pdf is displayed or downloaded - and if
someone is set up to not display or uses the procedure to bypass display -
then you cant make them see a display (as pdf).

But as Colin pointed out there are settings you can make in the event it is
displayed.

Many - probably most - have a pdf plugin in their browser that allows
viewing within the browser. Sometimes this is a long slow load or an actual
download of the pdf is what is desired. In such case if it is known to be a
pdf link - users would right click and choose download or Mac users can alt
click the link - or some might remove the pdf plugin so as to always
download.

If you want to always display the pages you can just repurpose as web pages
and offer the pdf as a download.

hope this helps

Brian

I echo what you say, Brian, but where you have a long document this
could be a problem, in that it could make the web site a lengthy affair.

A thought in Johny’s case is to make a gallery of spreads from the
PDF which can be quickly viewed on screen in small format, with the
PDF offered for those who want to see more detail or to print out
information.

In the simplest form, yes.

You also have Actions that allow you to produce a thumbnail of each
page or spread and open a larger copy of the picture when the mouse
passes over the thumbnail. For each thumbnail you use the Rollover
Action and for the larger image the Target Show/Hide Image or Target
Show/Hide Layer Action. (I think the Layer Action can only be used in
FW Pro - others might know better). You set the same number for
Mouseover # and Target # in the Rollover and Show/Hide Actions’
parameters and “Mouseover” to “Item” and stack all the large images
one above another in the same place.

Look for more detail in the Freeway Manual, search this forum, where
it’s been discussed before, or ask again if you need to know more.

Minimising the number of pages that a site visitor has to click
through to find what he wants is always good practice.

Yes its always the way, that without knowing the specifics, one cannot give
an answer that fits all, without writing a treatise!
As long as the cat gets properly skinned!
