Anybody use VoIP services such as Skype or Vonage?

I use Comcast Business VoIP here, which works pretty well, and I have a friend who has Vonage and hates it. The real issue for her is that it rides over a Verizon DSL connection, which goes out every time it rains. Or the power goes out. Or the cat sneezes. I imagine Vonage would be fine if you had a rock-solid IP connection to work with.

Skype is more of a once in a while thing, but I know people in England who use it as their regular “land line” phone. No idea how reliable it is in that form.

I use Skype exclusively (I have no landline or mobile) and pay $30 for a dedicated Skype number plus $2.99 monthly service. I do so mainly because it’s so inexpensive and I have very modest calling needs. Call quality has improved quite a bit over the years so in that regard I have no complaints. I don’t like that the gov. has access to my calls but then at this point there isn’t much they don’t have access to. Skype serves my modest needs fine though I wish I had no need for any type of phone/service.

I’ve used Vonage for maybe ten years now. Doesn’t seem possible! It’s a great deal for me. I’ve always run it on top of Comcast. There have been a few problems over the years, but the customer support is great and they clear things up quickly.

I get every option known to man and free long distance to North America and most of Europe. And the price is right. I have two lines, one of which has an 800 number piggybacked on it for an additional five bucks or so a month. There is an additional charge if I have more than a certain number of minutes a month coming in on the 800 number.

All in all I’m very satisfied. I don’t have any relationship with Vonage other than as a customer.

I have occasionally used Sipgate and they’ve been recommended by others. No
subscriptions and UK local numbers are provided free of charge.

Bottom line with any voip is you must have a fast internet connection.

My employer uses Skype a lot for communicating between overseas offices. I find it’s audio communications adequately useful though sometimes dropping audio.

My home phone system is an Ooma. Good quality audio and voice mail. I like it at $12US a month.
