web page translators

Hi Folks,

Has anyone come across the lowdown on web page translators, differences, best, etc.

I’ve a site thats been hit from 107 different countries since February so I added Googles translator to the site a month or so back.
In the past week I’ve had two emails saying its pretty worthless. One was from a Welsh speaker so that could be viewed as understandable but also from a French speaker which is definitely an issue. One would think the translator could cope with French reasonably well.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I don’t know which online translator is the better although if
translating another language to English I would tend to use Google to
get * the jist of * what is written.

To be honest if you think about it these translators like Google
actually do quite well considering what they are trying to do, Google
has come on quite a bit over time although still can turn a sentence
into gobblygook that takes a bit of work to understand, I think they
should be looked at them as being translation helpers rather than
actual translators.

When you stop and think about the task they are trying to undertake
you should probably realise that online translators or translator
applications will probably never be able to get it totally right.

Hi mike,

I think your right, it seems those with a problem will just have to put up with web translation and all its faults, google or others, for the time being.
Like your turn of phrase; translation helpers.

I did in my quest find this and the link to google’s MT Guru is also worth a read.
