I don’t recognize any of the names and don’t see anything that would
make me trust them. I have already deleted the mail and hope they are
stopped or at least made to introduce themselves first, then
contribute something helpful before placing an add in my mailbox.

Dave

PS: on second thought, don’t place any ads in my mailbox if you are
contributing to the group and have services I still don’t want this
kind of ad.

I’d like to hear some additional opinions about this, actually.

I tend to take a slightly looser view – if I know you, and you have
something to sell me, and you’re not just here to spam me, I may be
inclined to listen to your pitch. Preface the subject line with [ANN]
or similar, and for goodness sake – contribute something to the
community before you start hawking your wares.

If someone has something beneficial to offer the freeway users then perhaps there could be an appropriate place for them to do that - providing they are contributing to the freeway community in some way - I don’t see this as being the right place though.
As a member of other groups / communities, i have often seen them infiltrated with people out to make a few quid (Brit Slang!) off the back of those genuine members.
That said, I was fortunate enough to be recommended to a great web hosting company from this forum.
As an aside, perhaps this should be discussed elsewhere as every response is bringing in more plugs for said company each time it lands in our inboxes Re: ***

Here’s hoping you find a suitable solution.

Best wishes to all those great contributors here at freewaytalk - My Bible for everything Freeway! - it’s all in here somewhere.

Softpress doesn’t seem to have an admin address for the forum for me
to forward this too. I don’t know if it could be deleted anyway as
the forum is derived from the emails. Too late for the email
subscribers anyway.

I don’t want this to be policy, but I’ve taken the one-time step of
redacting the message (as well as putting the user in question into
moderation). I can’t guarantee that this won’t happen again, but for
all you e-mail users, I heartily recommend SpamSeive.

The Admin link for each of the lists is [listname]-
owner(a)freewaytalk.net. I’ll see if I can add it to the signature for
the lists.

Why not have a separate forum for advertising messages so that those who are interested in finding a offer can specifically look at them? This won’t eliminate spam ads, but at least you won’t have to subscribe to them.

The thing is, there’s nothing except the honesty of the poster keeping
things out of one list and in another. I’m not aware of any way to
identify spam at the server and shunt it off to a different list. By
the time the message hits Mailman, it’s already been delivered to the
list chosen by the sender, and I can’t redirect it.

Tricky problem to be sure.

It is, but here’s a thing: how often do we see this sort of thing? It’s always infuriating when something like this slides oilily in from the fringes, but actually, I can’t remember the last time it happened?

It’s a moving target as well. Blocking these sorts of activity can result in retaliation spam. Walt can block IP addresses if necessary, but also could end up trying to block the world.

I can’t remember the last time it happened?

I can, but it was a couple of years ago.

Yes, that’s kind of what I meant—it’s annoying, but it’s not annoying very often

Actually I meant to say if you are “not” contributing. I don’t mind a
helpful contributer making his/her services available or others
mentioning them. What I don’t like is flat out ads with nothing
relating to any particular conversation.

Example, If someone is asking about web hosting and someone that is
helping mentions that he offers hosting services, nothing wrong with
that in my book.
