Webyep - advice to one's clients

I know well enough not to paste into Freeway direct from Word and don’t think about that but I didn’t make enougfh of a point about it to a webyepped client who managed to paste a whole load of crap into one of his webyep richtext boxes. Curiously my browsers opened the page ok but his and other computers he tried from all stalled at what was a few thousand repetitions of and some other bits of tag and text.

So I felt to remind anyone who farms out such CMS functions to their client – to warn not to paste direct from Word documents.

Incidentally – can anyone tell me of the name of a text editor built into Windows – or a simple free one fro Windows – that can be used to keep backups of html without messing the code.

all the best
Brian

Hi Brian
aaaahhhh the old word rubbish!!!

if you want to use a built in text editor on a pc then there is notepad thats fine a simple editor

If you are using TinyMCE there is a clean up code button just in case people do paste word stuff

I hope this helps

One of the biggest problems with any CMS is the person putting in the content. And I mean BIG problem.

Its very much worth vetting your clients to double check if they are up to the job of editing a sites content. For the better good of the site (and your peace of mind) its sometimes better to do it for them. Nothing worse than showing off a CMS site to a prospective client, only to see all sorts of text or styling blunders.

“Been there done that” as they say.

Hi Max

yes TinyMCE.
The clear up code button is good to pass on.
To me and through me.
Thankyou

I’m relieved it was Word!
Client thought it was the recently upgraded webyep’s fault - and I wasn’t
sure he was wrong!

But we didn’t fall out - but grew through the process.

But isn’t it the way that one can get thrown by a false suspicion or
coincidence etc.

At risk of being a bit lazy here - are there any tutorial videos or material
relating to the various usages of Webyep?
I know it can do a lot more than I know - so I’d like to grow my own ability
and maybe offer support to clients who are not always digitally literate.

all the best

Hi David
Well my client pays me and I work with him/her to an end that they are happy with.
I don’t like to block another’s learning processes but try to support them.
Its true that many haven’t a clue – but I usually give out a test page for them to play with.
They are generally really happy to be able to edit some text on frequently changing pages.
There are backups to fall back on if they mess up. I let them know the risks and show them how to keep back ups.

If what they did was seriously undermining of the integrity of the site I would tell them.
But it is true that they can and often do make a lot of errors.
But isn’t that also life’s lesson?

I am probably freer in that I am not working at the top end of anything. That said I take care – and give value – and do my best for their needs within budget.
If I had design award winning sites listed in my portfolio I might feel differently.

all the best
Brian

It’s the little icon with the W on it. If you click on that, it opens a new window where they are supposed to paste their Word text, and it cleans it up.

It’s not the button that strips formatting. That button looks a little like an eraser … or a piece of Chiclet chewing gum.

You just have to get them to remember to click on the W icon. I have had problems with getting people to go that extra step. At least it sounds like Brian’s people LOOK at their work after they post. That’s a rarity.
