If I insert a url, http://www.somesite.com, into a WY Long text item
it works fine as a link, but if I want to use different text as the
link, for example ‘pictures’ and I reformat the link as <a
href="http://www.somesite.com>pictures it breaks the layout. The
Long text item is part of an accordion and the layout is inline. Am I
overlooking something obvious or could this be a conflict with the
accordion and/or layout?

That’s now how you link in a long text field. You do it like this:

<LINK:http://www.somesite.com pictures>
