What would stop Mail sending?

It’s a weird one this. I have about 20 email addresses, using the same mail server at the same domain used by various people at different locations. One of them (on a Mac using Mail) will not send anymore. Receive yes but not send. All others are working fine. I have checked the settings and they are correct, and using a Vista laptop connecting to the same router wirelessly, the emails will send using the same mail server as the Mac.

It’s a Have Host account, so POP and SMTP are both mail.mydomain.com. Set to use Port 25, and under Accounts/Advanced set to port 110, Password authentication and no SSL. Anyone got any suggestions?

Try using the alternative universe.have-host.com outgoing server and its associated settings.

If you go into your Cpanel and into the email account settings there is a button at the end of each email where you can Configure Mail Client

Select this and at the bottom you will see the manual settings for your account - this shows the option for using the universe account.

Hi Kryten,

Just caught up with may emails and your post, and I noticed you are using the default port of 25, try using the custom Port 26, I think this works better on the Have Host email accounts, I have all mine set to Port 26 and they all work.

Hope that Helps,

Steve.

Yes, thanks Steve. I remember ages ago James advised switching to port 26 from 25 and then later I’m pretty sure we were advised to switch back. But I may be completely wrong about that!!
Thanks for the tip. I’m sure I already tried switching to 26, but I’ll try again.

Kryten,

I don’t get to contribute to the FW forums, because I know very little about using FW … I only do so for my own website. So I hope I can repay a little bit of the help I’ve received here :

This smtp problem happens a lot to Mac users here in France. There were many complaints when Snow Leopard first shipped that mail could be received but not sent. But in the end, it is really down to your ISP and how they apply anti-spam measures. This is a moving target as things change over time.

The issue has a couple of factors, both of which can have an effect :

1/ Always ensure you go via your ISP’s own smtp server. Proviso :

(This can get blocked on sending too, if you are not using your ISP provided email address as the From address in your emails. (e.g. you might be using your own domain-name email).

In this case, you may be successful by sending via a different port, but as anti-spam measures are increased by your ISP, this option may suddenly stop working.

Alternatively and in my experience, more successfully, it’s a simpler and better idea to add your ISP provided email address in the field : Mail.app/Preferences/Account Information/Email Address/. (NB you can have as many email addresses in here as you want. Simply separate them with commas.)

Once entered, send an email using your ISP provided email address as the From address. This should go without hiccup and will put your ip address on their ‘ok’ list. (This may have been blocked if you have been sending several similar emails using a non-ISP provided email address).

Now go back into preferences and put your preferred email address at the front of the list and try sending from it. It should still work and your preferred address will still be ‘first choice’ or default, in the list when sending new emails.

2/ Ensure that your are using your ISP’s DNS servers in /System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS/. Using ‘Automatic’, should, but does not always work. Sometimes very slow page loads in Safari (or other) can be fixed by doing this too.

Hope this helps.

That’s very helpful Grant. Thanks v. much. The problem exists on a Mac that’s offsite and I haven’t been back since. They’re temporarily using webmail, until I can get over to them. But what you say makes a lot of sense.
Thanks again.
