Whats the best way to make a photos Gallery?

I am trying to build a website in Freeway 5 pro to promote my photographic business and want to have some photo gallery pages?

What is the best way to do this?

If I wanted a slide show, what would be the best way to do this as well?

I have been looking through some examples of other peoples websites (Photographers) in the Softpress Galleries and else where. Some peoples galleries and slide shows work well, fast and easy to use. But other can be slow.

I would like to run a slide show that also has the option of people being able to run it without waiting for a age for it all to happen. I would also like a slide show that people can revisit a picture of their choice.

Galleries that I have liked are

A) This style of clicking on a picture for the preview:
http://www.oakleyphotography.co.uk/
But I don’t think that it was done in Freeway. But could it be Done in Freeway?

B) I liked this style:
http://www.franckfollet.com/architecture.html

C) I also liked this style, where clicking on a picture gives you an a bigger image and you can then go to the next. http://www.ambientlife.co.uk/gallery_65204.html
Again, I don’t think that it was done in Freeway. But could it be Done in Freeway?

D) I liked the Slide Show and the clean presentation on this website created in freeway.

How would I create a similar affect??

Any advice would be very welcome

The Oakley site uses a version of Lightbox - have a look at Weaver’s MooTools Suite http://www.coastalrugs.com/Actions/mootoolssuite.html

Pullum Photography uses Flash for theirs have a look at Swif N Slide from Vertical Moon for Flash Slideshow creation http://www.verticalmoon.com/

Ambient Life could be done with Walter’s Carousel action. Carousel - ActionsForge

you can incorporate flash into your HTML for the galleries. I’m a photographer out of Phoenix and did mine this way. I used Freeway to design my site and then used SlideShowPro to do my galleries.

i’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about it.

Bingo, SlideShowPro all the way.

http://www.slideshowpro.net

It’s easy to use even if you’re a nub using Adobe Flash.

Have a look at this Off Topic thread:
http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/44075

I’ve used SlideShow Pro via lightroom and its very adaptable. Along with Flashnifties and monoslideshow etc. (http://www.monoslideshow.com/) these won’t break the bank (they’re broken already anyway :-{ ) or tie you down to a more expensive option.

Mootools options inc. Weaver’s MooTools (excellent Freeway action suite) seem legion for various slideshows, I’ve still to investigate all of these and see how easy they are to implement and integrate into Freeway. Here’s an example a Google search will reveal more. Parked Domain name on Hostinger DNS system

Thanks for the replies so far, They have been very informative

I like the look of Slideshowpro, I note that it is for use with Lightroom.

I have Adobe Photoshop and Bridge. Will it work with them (Being Adobe products) Given the amount of money Photoshop has cost me I am a bit loathed to buy yet another photo editing program. or am I over a barrel?

The Monoslide show looks ok but is a single use on a single website. I am looking to have a different website for different fields of photography. So that rules that out.

The Mootools option, it states that their are issues with FW. does anyone know what the score is now?

Would people agree that Slideshowpro is the best option?

Any other options?

There are issues using Protaculous and MooTools on the same page but if you dont mix then no problem.

Note that if you use any of the new Freeway 5 effects, anything that
allows you to set a visual transition or other effect, then you will
be installing Scriptaculous and Prototype, even though the Action
isn’t explicitly labeled as such.

Thanks for everyones help so far.

But given the cost of having to buy Adobe Lightroom before adding Slideshowpro I have decided against that. Buying Adobe Flash is far to expensive for my requirements.

I will still look at some of the other options mentioned.

On; “There are issues using Protaculous and MooTools” What is Protaculous anyway?

But looking through Adobe Photoshop there is an ability to create slide shows and one of them looks ok for now.

I am just a a bit disappointed that that Freeway is not better equipped on this function.

So I have a new Question.

In using Photoshop to create a webslide show/gallery. It creates a folder. In this folder I have three further folders (Images. Pages & Thumbnails). Plus four files (index.html I can have the html file as a htm file option. Photos.js, photos.xml, ThumbnailFrame.html & UserSelections.txt)

Now how do I get this on my web page?

I would guess that I would have to FTP the folder to the hosting server? Create a webpage using a master page, Create an object in the page and link it to the slide show index.html file in the slideshow folder/

ie; The object on the gallery page would have a link like this: http://www.WebSiteName.co.uk/SlideshowFolderName/index.html

Or have I got that wrong? Will the slideshow only come up with its own page without any of my master page banners ect?

Without a doubt go for a third party gallery solution. You will drive yourself crazy trying to do this is Freeway.

snapper,

Slide Show Pro does have a standalone version but like many of these galleries you have to change the parameters by hand so not as ideal compared with via lightroom or whatever.

As mentioned on the Off Topic thread there is the option to create one from within Freeway, I’ve also have been looking at various alternative’s but certainly wouldn’t rule this route out. I get asked to do websites by other photographers and feel a need not to continually use the same gallery layout.

I wouldn’t damn Freeway too much. As you’ve discovered there’s a wealth of expertise (err… exclude me there  on Freewaytalk to help you out, even over a holiday period, the true experts have helped/saved me on many an occasion.

If anything, it would be nice if there was a tutorial or two for integrating the various type of galleries ie. SSP available. Its one thing to be told something another to actually see it being done. Especially if like me your more visually oriented.

good luck

Hi Seoras

Thanks for your comments, I wasn’t damming Freeway as of such, I just feel that it is an area that I would have expected would have been included in making a simple image gallery.

It just seems strange that I have to buy yet another photo editing program and then buy an extra for that to do some thing that should be simple.

Anyone got any suggestion on using the Photoshop Web Gallery in Freeway?

I can run it as a separate page, but not in one of my Master pages from what I can see.

You could just upload the html generated by Photoshop separately as a standalone page with an ftp application, then link to that page url from Freeway.

That was my guess, damm, I wanted my business ID on the page.

Thanks

Back to the drawing board

I can’t believe something so simple is proving to be such a pain in the butt or so expensive to do given the amount of software I already have.

Look through the help menu in Photoshop for “Web photo gallery styles”. This help reference explains where the built-in styles are located, and what can be changed. You should be able to make a custom style using any text processor by editing the existing style.
