When does Strict become Transitional?

I’ve noted that there are times when even though one opts to have a site be 4.01 Strict it becomes 4.01 Transitional when uploaded and then checked with the W3C Markup Validation Service.

Is this because an included object or action can only be expressed in Transitional? If so, is there a way to be alerted to such at the time of including the object or action?

This query is the result of an internet discussion elsewhere where another party was somewhat sarcastic (my words) regarding there being any value to a site conforming to 4.01 Transitional.

A bit of a correction…

Subsequent to the opening posting I’ve noted that the change from Strict to Transitional occurs prior to the upload, being seen if one does a Preview in Browser, say Safari, and then in the browser opts to view the source code.

As far as I know this should never happen. If it does, it will be
either due to a bug or to user error…

Ahh, geeks! Doncha just love 'em.

There are a number of reasons for that, although some are fairly
esoteric. One quick one is the lack of support for providing a target
for a link in order to make something open in a new window. Both
forms of Strict output don’t allow this, whereas both forms of
Transitional do. If you need to output in Strict and want to have a
link open in a new window you’ll have ot resort to JavaScript tricks.

I have a site under construction that changes from strict to transitional when viewed in a browser. I’ve posted the Freeway 5 Pro site folder in the Public folder of my taliesinsoft iDisk within a folder ECR. I’m curious as to just what in this site is causing the shift away from strict.

Any enlightenment will certainly be appreciated!

Hi James,

All the pages in your site are set to HTML 4.01 Transitional already.
Do you mean that you are setting them to Strict in the Inspector and
then after previewing it is jumping to Transitional again?

With the site open in Freeway 5 I go to the File Menu and select Document Setup. In the panel that results I select Output and then select HTML 4.01 Strict. I then publish the site and then choose to preview the site in a browser, inmy case Safari. Then when I choose to view the source it states that the code is 4.01 transitional. This will happen also when the site is uploaded and then having the source viewed in Safari or when the URL for the site is submitted to the W3C Markup Validation Service.

I have taken the same steps in a couple other sites and the change from transitional to strict occurs when the above steps are taken to check.

After posting the above I went through the site and using the inspector individually changed each of the pages to HTML 4.01 Strict.

Now all of the pages except the Home page pass W3C validation for HTML 4.01 Strict. The Home page produces two errors.

I’ve updated the site in the ECR folder within the Public folder of my taliesinsoft iDisk so that it is currently identical with the site I’ve uploaded.

The uploaded version can be accessed at

Continuing from my immediately preceding posting…

It looks to me, a total non-geek when it comes to HTML (that’s why I use Freeway!) that the two errors on the opening page are related to the RandomImage action that I downloaded and installed. If so, could the HTML code be corrected and included in the page as a HTML object?
