which size

Hello all,

What do you think about the size of a website?
What size do you recommend now the sizes of the computerscreens gets
larger?

It would be a great help.

Just read this:

Resolutions vary a great deal. Most users have 1024x768 or higher, but a large minority have less.

It is important to note that (1) the display resolution says little about the size of the browser window, and (2) users can normally resize the browser window. Consequently no particular browser window size should be assumed.

A good way to ensure that sites will work for as many resolutions as possible is to design sites to be resolution-independent, i.e. not to specify font sizes in absolute units (e.g. pixels), and not to specify widths in absolute units unless a width is that of a fixed-width object, e.g. a GIF, JPG, or PNG image.

Many modern browsers have zoom features which may be used, among other things, to resize pages which are designed for specific resolutions, in order to fit the entire width of the page within the browser window. When, however, a browser resizes images, image quality suffers, and therefore the user experience suffers. This makes it all the more important not to design sites for specific resolutions.

According to Net Applications’ Market Share, in Oct 2009 about 94% of users have resolutions of 1024x768 or more.

If you’re going with a fixed layout I wouldn’t go wider than about
800. Not all screens are getting bigger - e.g. netbooks, iPhones and,
of course, iPads.

Marianne,

I suggest you develop your site using the 960 grid model. Using the 960 you stay within the current webstandards.

You’ll find more info about the system here: http://960.gs/

I like the 960px grid model as well, especially sites with multiple columns and lots of content.
For sites with minimal content 800px wide is sufficient. It gets hard to read a line of text if it spread out over 1200px.

Hello,
Have any Mac users had any experience of this after updating to Firefox 3.6…
Freeway 5.4.2 no longer previews the current page with ‘alt+cmd+B’.
Browser Setup has only one item: Firefox 3.6 (Default).l

I get the message:
“The browser was launched to show the file, but seems to have quit. Try launching it from the Finder.”
Whilst the Browser can be launched from the Finder, then navigating to the page to preview takes ages.

BTW Safari as Default works - but I want to have Firefox as Default.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
It’s a bug in Firefox.

Tim - thanks.
It works a treat!
I placed it in a new separate Folder in Applications/Freeway Scripts, so it won’t get overwritten by any future Freeway update.

I try to troll the Freeway Talk on a daily basis, and just stumbled across Tim’s fix for being able to view Freeway from your local disk in buggy Firefox. Great stuff! Thanks, Tim.

Wow - I was convinced it was a problem with my new iMac, so I second that vote of thanks to Tim. I can now use Firefox as my default browser again.
