Will I hurt a Google Ranking by recreating a site

A client of mine currently has a website up that has a very good google ranking. If you google “Christmas Lights Miami” his business comes up at the top.

He is not happy with the design of his site, however, so I will be recreating it for him. I want to make sure that I will not affect his google ranking though. As long as I keep all the same html wording and links to outside sites, will his ranking remain the same? Is there anything specific I need to be worried about?

Any info will be greatly appreciated. This is a great site and has proved very helpful, thanks to all who contribute.

I am a relative newbie to website design but have been working with Freeway Pro for over a year now. I have my own music store and started designing my own site after I could not find someone who would work within my budget and could produce a website to my liking. If anyone is interested you can check out my site at http://www.theguitaroutlet.com. It is still a work in progress, but any feedback I can get is always great! I have found that I enjoy website design very much and would like to make some extra money doing so.

Thanks for the help! …Pete

Try and keep your page names on the new site the same as the old site, For example if the About Us page on the old site was www.sitename.com/about.html - keep it the same, do not change it to something like www.sitename.com/aboutus.html

If you don’t want to affect it in any way, then don’t change the Page URLs, Page Titles, Outside Links or HTML content.

If his site was done a while ago, you could improve it too by structuring the page better - H1, H2 etc. and addind ALT Tags to images.

I believe that google does like sites that are updated, and kept new/fresh, but not 100% sure if a full rebuild will affect anything in either a good or bad way.
