Wireless router any benefits replacing ?

Hi chaps, I get (don’t we all) intermittent connection/speed problems with my router (Netgear DG834GT) on my imac using Airport. To be honest most of the time things are OK but now and then I find restarting the router improves things and I’m wondering if there have been speed improvements in the more modern routers (this one must be 6+ years old) - I think I pay for 24 gbps but get about 4 on a good day though this morning it’s around 1.5 it’s probably all down to the network connection ie size of the pipe, congestion etc etc and despite lots of conversations with my ISP they have an easy get-out “local conditions”, distance from exchange etc. I don’t want to throw money away but the new ones aren’t too expensive so if there were to be an improvement in my “surfing experience” I’d go for it … thanks for your time Roger

Hi roger,

If its any help our home connection was suffering similar issues, and eventually go much worse by not able to connect at all. The ISP said the same thing about “local conditions” etc. etc. so I went out and bought a new router as a gamble. The connection problems disappeared.

What was strange was all the tech guy said the old router was OK by checking remotely, and routers seldom have a problem even old ones. But buying a new one fixed the issue out of the box!

Take from this what you wish. I took a gamble and replaced the router.

The office router here is still working fine after about 6 years. On a “low contention ratio of 10-1” business connection. Contention Ratio accounts for a lot of speed issues. On home connections on a 50-1 contention ratio, with say lots of Networked Christmas Playstations working, your speed will suffer very badly.

Thanks, as ever David … I seem to be in communication with you more often than I am with my wife, let’s hope people don’t start to talk !

Interesting point about the old router and given that they don’t cost a fortune well worth a try.

Best Roger

Without a doubt upgrade your router. And also have the connection direct if possible not via airport. Speed pickup is noticeable.

What you could do to start with of course is to reset your router and also upgrade the firmware but I still suggest an upgrade - yours is a dinosaur!

Thanks John Paul - I reset on a (very) regular basis and have ensured that I’m using up to date firmware so buying new seems a good idea.

I’ll push my luck now - any advice as to what to buy - I’ve been happy with netgear but have heard good and bad reports of dlink and, of course, they all claim super fast connection but that is providing it’s getting super fast information to route ?

Regards Roger

I’ve been using Linksys for the past four years, very happy with it.

Apple’s new Airport Extreme (802.11n) works quite well for me - fast and stable.

I have a Netgear DG834 v2. Very small, very white. Will go with your Airport.
