XWay SEO

I’m about to embark on updating my wife’s site in XWay ( :flushed: ). She has a client who is high-end in AI for scientific researchers and also something of a specialist in SEO. Quite rightly, he’s ridiculed my current SEO efforts (I have no idea what I’m doing) and who has suggested that she redo her site in Wordpress and that he would then (very generously) do the SEO for her.

I can’t find any info about SEO and XWay and I’m wondering how it’s handled and how easy it would be for me to apply SEO that was created for Wordpress. I think we’re talking backlinks and the like.

Could anyone give me a brief explanation of how I might approach this in XWay? How easy is it to do the SEO in XWay?

SEO is important; they’re absolutely right about that. But rather than suggesting someone redoes their site in a different tool (which is frankly quite rude) they should explain what specifically they see as key things to do. Semantic structure (naming things usefully, to start with) is one thing. That’s something you have full control over in Xway and virtually none at all in WordPress. Fortunately with a well-made WP theme you get much of that automatically, but it’s not guaranteed. Well-written content is another thing. That’s tool-agnostic; you can publish content that’s awful for SEO in any platform you like, it won’t make it any better.

I’ve used WordPress quite a bit, including setting up 30+ sites at a time and teaching publishing students how to take their publishing ideas online. If your wife would like to be able to add posts to her site on an ad-hoc basis, WordPress is a good choice. But if control over the details of the design and behaviour is important, WordPress is a terrible choice.

Xway can be used to create very SEO-friendly sites. If your wife’s client can’t see that it’s not the tool itself, it’s the lack of SEO-specific knowledge that’s led to this, then they’re frankly not that much of a specialist.

Hi Grant,

In addition to what Keith said, have a look at the chapter on Meta Tags in the Xway User Guide.

Jeremy

Thanks Keith, very useful.

The client is an academic working in AI and has been working for a number of years on a platform that uses AI for scientists working in research, where it can find relevant materials automatically for them according to specific criteria. Sort of google for scientists. Consequently he knows a lot about SEO. His offer of help, is because he knows Wordpress and can do it all for her easily.

As you say, Wordpress has its limitations and I’d much prefer to build a site in XWay… there’s just this question of how I can apply the SEO and if it will be up to snuff.

Question: If he helped with the SEO for a Wordpress site, how easy would it be for me to simple apply the same thing to an XWay site?

Jeremy… OK, thanks. I shall check it out.

I agree completely with Walter.

One of my favorite SEO lore stories involved Hilton Hotels a while ago. They redesigned their website and their homepage referred to things like hospitality and accommodations, but nowhere did they use the word “hotel”!

Be very careful and deliberate about the language you use in HTML text and make sure that you express what you’re trying to do clearly and succinctly. Search engines are very literal and “cute” doesn’t work in my opinion.

Thanks Richard, that’s a good example.

I’m not going to be doing the SEO myself, so my question was really about how SEO applied in XWay compares to SEO applied in Wordpress and how easy it would be to use Wordpress SEO in XWay. I want to make the site in XWay, but there’s pressure to do it in Wordpress.

Thanks Jeremy,

XWay User Guide is very useful. (If only I’d searched it for ‘Meta Tags’ instead of SEO.)
