YAAAY! Canvas for Mac is back!

Received email last night, beta due in spring 2014.

Now, I know that some of you hate Canvas, and it is a bit of a piece of bloatware, but it does have some nice aspects. It is certainly much nicer than Illustrator, and if ACD make a good job of getting rid of the bugs, it might tempt some disaffected Freehand users.

What’s this got to do with Intaglio?

Well, sometimes if I am doing professional work, I often have to export an Intaglio document to pdf and open it with Illustrator to fix it (e.g. to get the overprinting right). I should be able to do this with Canvas now. With luck, I will never need to open Illustrator ever again.

Also, for those who follow my work, my freeform bezier maps are simply impossible to contemplate with Intaglio. The way you manipulate and change control points and handles is just too clunky. Canvas is the best software I know for editing beziers. Intaglio could be better, and I’ve emailed Nick with suggestions, so we will see.

Not that I’m going to switch sides, I love Intaglio, and for my linear maps, I can’t think of a better way of doing them. The software irritates the hell out of me, but for what I want to do, when it is in a good mood, I love it.

For latest of my mad maps, take a look at this, went viral on the internet (basic design work done with Intaglio, corners rounded with Illustrator):

Has the Intaglio mail list died? I haven’t received anything since Jun 5, 2013. Checked my account an everything looks OK. Perhaps Intaglio has finally been perfected to the point whereon one needs to talk about it?

There are still sporadic threads. I have mixed feelings about Intaglio’s development plans and I have written about it in the past.

A few months ago I managed to exchange emails with a developer who said they were working on a new major update (this is also in one of my posts).

I think that developers are just taking their time and that things move slowly, irrespective of our discussions. The developer(s) behind Intaglio are not really good at engaging with their user base.

Having said that, I keep using intaglio on a daily basis: the lack of plans and development is scary, but the software is still good for me.

Hi Daniele,

I received you message so I guess I’m still subscribed. I still use Intaglio a lot also.

Probably not, but given that I am still on a PPC and that my needs
have not changed …

The Mail list isn’t dead, as I occasionally see stuff pop into my mailbox, I guess what’s really happening is that far fewer people are using Intaglio, because of tablets. There’s even Intaglio for iPad, but it is so fiddly to use, and so slow in its workflow that I far prefer to use the Mac OSX desktop version. I think fairly soon we’ll see a renaissance in Macbook use.

I was an early adopter of the iPad, but tbh, I far prefer using my desktop because of the speed and file system. But I agree, the developer doesn’t seem to be interested in its user base, which is a bit of a shame. Intaglio is one of the reasons I still haven’t switched to using Windows. I still use Intaglio almost every day.
