A Question for Everyone

Addressing the itch of curiosity, how many of you here on FWT would actually consider sharing, in the form of (video or text-only) tutorials or articles - i.e. anything of interest to you that draws upon your professional experience, technical/creative know-how or pet peeves - to a community-based site built for creative professionals? I’m talking about a more diverse and organized repository of information/topics (technical and creative) under one roof.

Yes, I realize a handful of you have been making similar contributions on FWT (and probably elsewhere) for many, many years but this would not be another FW-only community, though it could of course include a Freeway-specific section assuming there were people willing to contribute.

I’m currently busy with a few projects that spawned from several ‘can this be done with freeway’ here. There are more Pro users here who do the same (we know who they are). Like other’s also my answers (tutorials) on such questions only appear on those threads, but remain invisible elsewhere.

I support your suggestion organizing such a ‘knowledgeable’ of techniques and such. I could imagine even add tutorials adding external scripts and ‘under the hood’ kinda stuff like adding HTML markup and use external stylesheets to make stuff work.

In the past the very talented Dan Jasker offered very, very detailed and clear (videocast) tutorials I still watch every now and then.

Tim also has put up http://www.freewaystyle.com … this could be a foundation to build on as well?

And if you have a screencast (even a little one that demonstrates a basic method) feel free to post it at http://freewaycast.com

Todd, it sounds a lot like you want something similar to StackOverflow. (And it’s important to note that there are cousins of SO (different names, same parent company) that serve other audiences than traditional front- and back-end developers.

True, there are other sites that offer a similar concept, SO being one. But personally, SO (as one example) doesn’t really do it for me when looking for answers. I’m not thinking of a running conversation/thread type of scenario. I envision a slightly different approach/setup/structure. Though how realistic/feasible it is I haven’t worked out yet.

In any case, I’m not looking to reinvent the community website concept, but rather build something to address my own personal needs and frustrations when searching for info, and if that could be of value to a wider audience then all the better. Obviously there are numerous quality resources out there and this idea is in no way an attempt to replace those resources (as if that could be done anyway). Rather it would only be another, possibly more convenient, option.

Just an idea right now.

That’s a very good example Richard, and one scenario I would like to see addressed with my idea.

There would seem to be a lot that could potentially be done to increase and improve the overall experience, accessibility and usability of sharing information, whether it’s purely technical or creative/artistic or somewhere in-between.

Having well-organized broader categories (e.g. languages, CMS, print, software, arts …) with relevant sub-categories would offer a quick overview and perhaps (hopefully) encourage contribution. And of course contributors would get due credit/links which could be beneficial to their own site traffic.

It’s an interesting concept, and probably a lot of work too given some of the rough ideas I have for possible functionality.

This was one of my reasons for building ActionsForge the first time. My “itch” was that I would remember there was an Action somewhere — somewhere — that did what a poster to the mailing list was asking, but damned if I could lay my hand on it when needed. So many places to look, and no clear index. There were a couple of attempts to make a PDF (remember those?) of all the Actions in the world, but it was incomplete, and since it was centrally created, there was no way to add yourself to it if you came up with a new Action.

I heartily endorse the idea of building something for yourself, and seeing if it is useful to others. If nothing else, it’s a great way to learn a new framework or exercise a favorite one.

While I do think the idea has some merit its usefulness will depend entirely on other people (not just FWers) getting involved. Only time will tell if that actually happens which is why I’m trying decide (via my crystal ball) how much time, if any, I want to devote to building something that may never get used.

Long stalked and long thought about it. Could write prose so let’s shorten it:

One problem is the different interests of those that could support you. Some are writing and giving for free, others are a lil bit profit oriented.

My current page is serving both. I try to link to other resources as well. Ernie has an interesting project called workbench with incredible stuff in.

Furthermore I had the plan to grab lists of interest from here and transfer it to my page. But I dropped this idea because I can’t simply copy and paste the original authors words from here and put it on my page (without asking).

Cheers

Thomas

PS:

I once started to create such a Freeway-wiki whatever. It’s still on air: http://www.freeway-tricks.com but I gave it up. As well here the problems of different interests.

It’s true that people have different motivations but they don’t need to participate if they don’t want to, it would be strictly voluntary like many community websites. It wouldn’t be a store so if they’re looking to sell a product or service directly from the site then there are other/better options. That being said they could certainly link back to their own site/blog/FB page/store etc. if they have stuff to sell.

True. My idea does not involve copying posts from other sites.
