Adding a blog to my site

First, let me say how thankful I am for all the help I receive from these discussions. My first attempt at a responsive site is now up and running. It still needs work, but it’s a work in progress and will keep me occupied over the winter.

I plan to include a blog on the site (as opposed to hosting it somewhere else), so that I can have complete control over it’s appearance and ensure consistency in branding.

I’m not sure whether I should build the blog as a part of my existing site (e.g., simply a “blog” directory within the main site), or if I should build a separate sub-site hosted on my server (i.e, an external link from my main site to the sub-site). (Sorry if I’m using the wrong terminology.)

I live in an area with poor internet connectivity, so want to minimize uploading time as much as possible. The main site only gets updated every month or so, but the blog will get updated twice a week.

Are there any pros / cons (particularly related to SEO) to either approach?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Cheers,

Sue

This topic is often debated elsewhere but the consensus seems to be there’s no definitive answer as there are pros and cons to each. A Google search will turn up many interesting articles.

I am still an advocate of Pulse’s Blog feature for self hosting.

There’s still a good argument for using Blogger - not just for the FW actions and integration, and being to make entries from anywhere - but for the SEO considerations as they are run by Google. You can set up the FW site to mirror the blog entries on your own site, under your own branding/style. Blogger is customizable too FWIW.

By the same token, I do understand you wanting things completely consolidated - just thought it’s worth consideration.

I can second that, I’m using PulseCMS for years, and it’s by far the best (tiny) CMS solution there is.
