Adding Contact Information to your profile

There have been a lot of ideas tossed back and forth about how to
enable private messaging of one sort or another in this new forum. To
that end, I have added a completely optional Contact Information
section to your personal page.

If you would like to make it possible for people to contact you,
enter whatever you like in the way of contact information in the
designated field on the “My Account” page.

Whatever you put there will appear on your profile page – but only
for logged-in members of the community. Anyone else who manages to
navigate to that page will see nothing in its place.

You can put any sort of e-mail addresses or links in this area – I
have removed the e-mail cloaking device in this field, since it is
members only and completely optional in any case.

I know some of you will be itching to put every single bit of your IM
accounts and e-mail and Blackberry numbers in there, so go nuts!

Walter,

If I try to add a link using < a href= etc, these links seem to get rendered relative to the base URL of freewaytalk.net (at least in the preview anyway).

Try putting the http:// part in there. I just tried on mine, and it worked fine. Also, if you want to make a link that looks like this:

Walter Davis Studio

be sure to add it like this:

[Walter Davis Studio](h ttp://www.walterdavisstudio.com)

(remove the space between h and t above)

If you want to add a link to an e-mail address, just put in the address, surrounded by < and >. Markdown automagically changes it to a proper mailto: link, and also obfuscates it with random entity formatting.

Please note that I am not using the same formatter in the regular forum area, because of the need to deal with lots of legacy BBCode and other assorted weirdness. This has the bad side-effect of breaking standard Markdown syntax. I may be able to fix this later on for the general list.

Ah! Thank you. That worked beautifully in the preview while I was creating it, but if you look at my profile, the AIM link appears mangled.

Try again. I have been fiddling with the AIM (and other protocols)
quite heavily this morning, and I think I have it all worked out. If
it still looks funny, force-refresh your browser because it’s all
done in JavaScript and you may have a stale cached script.js.
