Adding rel=nofollow

I’m trying to figure out a way to fix the spam problem here. I was able to code something very simply (once I remembered how few features Prototype 1.5 had) in JavaScript, but I have two concerns about that:

Will it work in search engines?
Can it be circumvented?

Can anyone recommend a way to do this in PHP (elderly version) without falling prey to common regex failings?

Apologies for the late reply Walter.

I created a template helper tool for Pulse CMS a while ago that uses the PHP Simple HTML DOM Parser from http://simplehtmldom.sourceforge.net

Using the library you can target text links and search for and append attributes quite easily.
