I agree - the video was stunning to watch. What will be interesting to see
is how open to customization this code-generator will be.

If this thing actually works as well as the video would have us believe then SP could be staring at the business-end of some new serious competition. As Marcel mentioned, the code certainly looks good.

The code part of the presentation is what I thought most impressive – they
really seem to have some good ethical intentions about how things get built
instead of just what they look like, yet flexible enough to allow users to
choose how they interact with the building. I bet that if I did want an
instance of an element id, I could just type #myelementid into their item
outline and it would just act like I was the boss.

Very impressive.

Watching the video, I thought that this is what FW6 looked like in my dreams. Would like to hear how SP towers feel about this. It sure looks a lot more elegant than Adobe Edge.

I don’t know how they feel, but I don’t believe they even think like this.
This may look like a wysiwyg editor to you and me, but the philosophy is
just not the same.

Do you mean they don’t think of a web design app (Macaw) in terms of this type of functionality and features?

Todd

I think they still believe that semantics and webstandards are touchy-feely
liberal crap, that visual layout and coding are mutually exclusive, and
that their target users need protection from the code side of things.

I still believe that the singular inventive Freeway moment was the Extended
style option - I am continually grateful to whoever championed this
feature. However, nobody ever followed up on it. While it gives the user
amazing access to the internal workings, it really doesn’t give the user
any help with exploiting them. This video shows a much better way to treat
users.

Well, I can’t say I entirely disagree, and you already know what I think about all this.

Could not have said it better myself.

I have become pretty proficient in hand-coding by dissecting Bootstrap and other responsive frameworks and using apps like CSS Edit and Espresso/Coda. I believe by bringing the code element together with familiar layout techniques will make Macaw a contender. The flaw with the likes of Edge has always been the sloppy code output. Now let’s hope the chaps at Macaw will not sellout to Adobe, we all know what they did to FreeHand.

I have to say that looks very impressive.
The html construction is super simple and the css is straight forward and logical.
if this is half as good as it looks then without a doubt it will be successful… but lets wait and see what the first release is like first.

I know Softpress is not as rich as I am, but I wonder if they even consider
buying a product like this to replace the old Freeway.

A product like Macaw might actually make me want to use a visual design tool again. I look forward to its progress.

I swore several times to never deal with an alternative app and learn hand-coding instead (which I did on a very low level), but this indeed is breaking me down.

But it also looks like another process I know from the business life:

Acquiring knowledge, being smart and using brain seems not to be core skills anymore. So each brave groom will make stunning webpages … cool.

If injecting native code is also as easy as the rest - thrilling.

But if we all jump up that train:

Promise me that we meet as on another forum again. My life would be poorer without you guys.

Cheers
