Any other Freeway Help Forums out there?

Sorry, but the interface, and completely inefficient search engine renders this site pretty useless.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think this is the place to be for all things Freeway.

Perhaps Walter can chip in for the finer point of using the search box?

Simply ask for what you want and then you only have to read anything that
anyone else is willing to offer. If you sub via email you don’t have to deal
with the site at all.

It works enough that many share help through it.

If you have particular criticisms of this site (Freewaytalk) they may be
something that can be addressed - though it is a compromise between many
things - including email and web based access and interaction.

hope this helps

regards
Brian

The search engine is only as good as what you type into it. If you’re
looking for something common, any search engine is going to be a hunt-
and-peck experience, because you will get too many hits. Try using the
boolean operators:

“this is a phrase” (surround in quotes)

+leading -pro (plus means must include this word; minus means cannot
include this word)

Try synonyms, a longer search string, a shorter search string…

We use Sphinx, which is a very very nice (and fast) engine. If you
look for something specific, it will find it.

I think if you stick around, you will find that this is an extremely
generous community, people here bend over backwards to help each other
grow and learn. You’ve been a member since the beginning of this
month, and you’ve asked one question. I didn’t answer it when you
posted it because I don’t have Express and didn’t want to talk out of
school. I’ve just answered it as best I could since you seem so likely
to throw the baby out with the bath-water here.

(Seriously – be patient, and if you don’t get an answer, ask again.)

Perhaps some info about how to do the finer points of searches could be held on the forum somewhere?

if we were on a board where you could set your search preferences, sure.

here, no.

case in point: i have freeway express, and almost every time i look for an answer to a question, it’s for pro.

Why not just post a question? I sure one of us will help you.

Could you say a little more about this? I’m not sure what you’re
referring to when it comes to search preferences. There might be a new
feature in this.

I doubt sincerely that we could restrict the search to express,
because only rarely do people even point out which version they are
using when they post their questions. You could try tacking +express
on to your search, but that’s likely to limit the results, too,
because even if your question was answered already, it might not have
come up in the discussion that it was about Express.

Pro and Express share a whole lot of common features: where Pro will
offer an interface to do something, you may have to “get out and push”
in Express. But both will do the same job more or less.

My first thought on this would be to include check box below the message area to select which version FW is being referenced. Then you could add to text to header?

perhaps i’m just venting.

it can get a little frustrating, trying to find out something, like, say “why the quality of my images is so bad”, then finding out there’s a fix, then discovering that it’s a pro only fix.

guess i should have ponied up the cash for pro, when i had the chance.

The upgrade price from Express to Pro is the difference in price between them, when you buy direct from Softpress and have the latest major revision (5.x). Even if you have a previous version of Express, the price to upgrade to Pro is almost as good. It’s a great deal!

That’s not a bad idea. I’ll see if I can get a moment this weekend to
put that in. Sphinx does an incredible job of filtering if you know
the trick:

  1. Go to the FreewayTalk page
  2. Enter ‘background’ (without the quotes) in the search field, and
    hit return
  3. 2,142 matches

  4. Enter ‘background +pro’
  5. 282 matches

  6. Enter ‘background +express’
  7. 70 matches

Considering that’s one of the more ambiguous words you could put in
the search engine, I’d say that’s pretty decent noise rejection…
