Afternoon all, nothing to do with Freeway here, but my wife is pushing me in the direction of Apple TV.
I work from a shed in the garden, and this is where all of my movies and tunes are stored, and the wifi is pretty poor between this Mac and the house, so my question is:
can I attach an external USB/Firewire drive to Apple TV and play directly from this as well as downloading from the Apple store?
Thanks in advance for info on the above, and also anything I should look out for, good or bad.

Nope. The USB port is proprietary and is intended for updating the AppleTV firmware and will not recognize a drive if you plug one in. There is no Firewire port. But the AppleTV is designed to stream from a wireless connection so I would look at updating your wireless setup, or connect the AppleTV to a network via ethernet.
The new AppleTV (the little one) is a stream-only device, so the only sources for it are a Mac on the same network running iTunes and library sharing enabled, or the iTunes Store. The older model could connect a disk, as it ran a modified version of Mac OS X and did its own library management and local storage. The new little one is an iOS device, sort of a hybrid iPod touch with HDMI out and a remote. It has only enough local storage to buffer a stream and bootstrap itself.
Have you thought about running some Cat5 wire between the buildings and placing a cheap Gig-E switch at each end?

Okay thanks, that’s great info Chuckamuck. So what use is the USB port then? How can you update visa that if it doesn’t recognise anything?

It’s really only for Apple’s use. There is a hack out there of jail breaking the TV using the port with a flash stick you burn yourself, but that’s it.
All Apple updates are done from your wireless (wired) internet connection.
Thanks Walter, it’s a bit too far for cabling, but I’m using one of those electric ethernet plug things through the mains at the moment, and heading on from Chuckamuck’s suggestion, I’ll probably go this route with the Apple TV.

Actually, it comes with Netflix installed also so you can watch that without any trips to the Apple store thank you very much! (Works great by the way)
Sounds good thanks, but I thought Netflix wasn’t available in the UK. However, I think I’ve decided to go for it along with the ethernet mains adapter.
Walter, Chuckamuck, thanks for the pointers.

Personally I wish they would sign on to blockbuster streaming or set up there own service.
I don’t like the fact w Netflix that “new” movies that are released are b rated from '10 … Nothing real recent that was top box office
Just my opinion

I live 600 feet to far out for cable TV so I love my netflx. Local Cable company wants $28,000 US to come the last 600 feet? I almost wished I lived closer to town. I want the cable so I would not have to rent space downtown for my servers.
