Are PNGs vector based?

I’m starting work on a new website. I requested that my client provide me with a vector file for their logo, but all they had was .jpgs and .pngs.

I know that .jpgs are bitmapped images and I thought .pngs were as well, but I was surprised to learn that when I dropped the .png into Photoshop it was scalable (both up and down), with no apparent resolution loss.

Have I been misinformed about .pngs?

PNG is a pixel format, no vectors, sadly. You may be remembering PCT, which was an Apple-only combo pixel/vector format. It’s not much used any more, but you can still make them out of PowerPoint, I think.
