audio file problem in IE

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light where I’m going wrong…I’m having problems getting an audio file to play in Internet Explorer.
The link to the audio file, titled “9/21/08”, is on this page, http://cbcfb.org/pastorspage.html (I know the site has a striking resemblance to the “Chili Peppers” tutorial - but the client wanted a simple tabbed site).
The file works in firefox and safari, but not in explorer. The plan is to have the client ftp the audio file to the server and I will create the link to it on the site…but this plan might not work if explorer won’t play the file…any thoughts or ideas.
Thanks in advance,
Rich

What format is the audio file? Can IE play it on it’s own?

It appears to be an mp3 file. Does IE have a player, or does it go grab Windows Media Player? Don’t know much about how Windows handles mp3 files, but seems like it should work. Or…maybe there is a speed issue? It is a big file.

It is an mp3 file.
Is it possible to make the “link to file” action work if the file is on the server?

If you want to link to a bare file, just add a manual link to it. You’ll have to know the relative location of the file on your server, but it should be something like Resources/yourFile.mp3.

Hi Walter,
That the manual link to the file is what is currently there. The whole idea of this page with links to the audio files is that I would create a couple of months worth of links to files in a folder as the client creates the audio they will name each audio file based on the link I set up and after they ftp the file the link should become active.
I’m might try to figure a different way to do this…thanks your your input though.

But if you do that, the links will all be 404 until your client uploads the files. Are you trying to work ahead, so that you won’t have to update the file list area as often?

There’s a couple of things you might try. One would be to use a server-side tool to make the html list of files for you. This way, the clients can upload anything they like to their files folder, and the HTML will take care of itself. You can see an example of this here: http://freewaypro.com/actions/downloads

Another thing to try would be the WebYep Content Management System. There’s a way to add files through a Web form (for your client) and again, an automatic index of the files to display on your page.

Walter,
You are correct, this is an attempt to work ahead, or in this case the client wants the site to be updated, but they don’t want to pay me to do the updates. And yes there will be a 404 error message until the client uploads the file.

I REALLY need to take some time to learn how to use WebYep for this sort of thing…thanks for help and ideas.
