Autoplay Flash video files

I know that this has emerged in parts in different forums but I thought I’d try and draw a bit more attention to it as it is something that would be really useful.

How is it possible to make a flash video file autoplay upon the page loading?

I have done a bit of checking on line regards this but most folk want to go in the opposite direction i.e. stopping them from autostarting, which is curious considering the number of folk looking for the autostart option in these forums.
The options under the Flv player are somewhat limited but I was wondering if the Actionscript might be an means to achieving this. What are the Actionscripts 2 and 3 which appear as options under the Actionscript box?
If there isn’t a means to achieving autoplay from within the existing action then maybe there is a way to set a trigger to play the video upon page loads or something similar.
Any help to gain greater control over flv files would be greatly appreciated.

Hi tonzodehoo,

There isn’t a way to achieve this using the Action as it stands currently, you might want to try this Action out though, which will play movies using whatever method is available in the browser (HTML, or Flash) and has the ability to automatically start the movie when the page loads:

Hope this helps,

Joe

Hello again Joe and thanks for your speedy response.
I had been trying ot get this one to work with a flv file. I reckon it gets us a bit closer to a resolution.
It does work in safari though the flv plays in a very stuttering fashion.
In Firefox there is the need to convert the file to an ogg file. This is a bit of a pest and though I’ve tried it a couple of times I can’t seem to get it to function. the firefogg conversion seems to cause either a stall of firefox or else for nothing much to happen at all.
Where does the conversion happen? Is it in the home file or is it just as firefox is trying to display the file?
Not sure if I can work out whats happening at this conversion stage.
Again any help is welcome.

Hi,

I think you need to make an mp4 file first, flv won’t work I don’t think (mp4 can be played by Flash). Once you’ve done this the Firefogg conversion should work for you.

Hullo again Joe,

Thanks for that.
It was actually an .m4v file I had been trying it out with as well as trying the firefogg conversion. I have tried also an export from quicktime as an .mp4 but the resultant quality was really messy and still the firefogg conversion didn’t work.

It is a pity that the apparently simple task of getting a flv file to autoplay seems such a challenge. Is there a particular reason why it is so? This particular issue is holding up my workflow on a few projects and I know if I can resolve this then it would allow me to work more smoothly rather than having to do more conversions etc.

Have you any idea what the Actionscripts are in the Flv action and whether they may be a means to achieving the autoplay result?

There won’t be any simple way of making it work in the Action, the Actionscript levels just refer to the level used by the skin. The only way to get a full FLV player to work with the functionality you want is to use the Longtail video method (which our support team can help you out with, I’ll see if we can get a KnowledgeBase article up at some point today too).

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Joe

Hullo Joe,

I’ve got the longtail version up and running. Other than the small logo at the start which I could do without this seems to work well. Smooth delivery and not too bad a set up.
I guess having more complete in house control over the end product without having to resort to using the longtail one would be perfect.

I’ll persist and if I manage to make any progress then I’ll leave a message here. Look forward to any further info.
The website in question for this first bit is at

Cheers
