Does anyone have any experience with Axure <www.axure.com> for use in application development (creating wireframes, prototypes, and mapping out specifications)?
One of the potential developers I’m looking to hire for a major contract has suggested it as a Stage-1 platform to map out the project.
Any other suggested tools?

I would look at Balsamiq http://balsamiq.com/. It seems the most
similar to Axure with a more wallet-friendly price but maybe not with
the same level of refinement. OmniGraffle is another lightweight option.
There are others, try searching “mac wireframe app”.
