Background Question

Your DailyShow example is actually a trick. There are two parts to it. The main graphic part is 1440px wide by 364px tall. The rest of the background is a color that matches the left, right and bottom edges of the header graphic so when you change browser window size it appears to go on forever.

Okay, so basically, in order to create this page, you would make the page as wide as the top graphic and simply define the borders of the content part of the page with various graphic boxes and what not?

The other example I found is the Softpress website. The top graphic image expands to the entire width of my screen no matter what resolution I view it in unless it is smaller than the normal content of the page.

How is this possible?

and thanks Chuck.

The “page” is only the area where your content is displayed. The background is not part of that. It can be any size you want.
