background sound

Hello

Does anybody know whether there is an action that enables the user to switch off or mute the background sound. If not does anybody have an alternative solution?

Thanks

Mog

You need to add the background sound with a visible controller, either
by using the QuickTime MP3 player or by drawing an HTML box and
embedding the audio file in it (really old-school multimedia, relying
on the browser to supply a plug-in or helper application based on the
content type). There are also many many Flash players out there that
can do this. You can usually set these to play on load if that’s what
you want. Basically, in order to make it stop, you have to allow the
user to start it also. (And that’s just a lot friendlier in my opinion
than not allowing the option. Also tends to keep your audience a
little longer, too.)

Hi Walter

Thanks for getting back to me.

I’m not sure how to do this with QuickTime mp3 player or where to get hold of the controller.

I’ve put a sound FX action into html item but this does not automatically play. The user has to press the item to make it play.

Do you mean embed it into the html mark up?

Would it be possible to give me some instructions on how to do this? Or where to source a suitable flash player?

Thanks

Mog

The freeway manual says:

Note: There is no volume control available in the Background Sound Action,
so you must set the sound level before the sound file is imported. There is no
user interface available for visitors to your site to either mute or stop playing
the sound, which should be considered before using this Action.

Hi Walter

I’ve worked out how to embed the quicktime player but it doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing. So just some more info about flash player would be good.

Thanks very much

Try dragging the mp3 file directly into Freeway from the Finder. Drag the corner of the resulting box into the shape you want the controller to be, and preview in a browser. This is seriously old-school, I’m working from memory of 1997 or 8 here.

Hi Walter

Yes this shortens the player and looks neater but I think a flash player could look better. Also I think with QuickTime it is possible to download the mp3 and I don’t want the tunes to be availabe for download.

If you have any ideas about where to source a suitable flash player that would be great.

Thanks for your help

I don’t think you’re going to be able to rely on a Flash player keeping people from downloading your file. If you encode the music as a QuickTime mov, you can set a flag in the process that tells the QuickTime plugin not to allow downloads.

But before you do all that, take a look at the current incarnation of the site with a windows pc. You probably won’t see the QuickTime player there, you’ll see something else, which was the point of this exercise all along.

I’d you want to play the music without permitting downloads, you’re going to need some sort of streaming player, and that should be pretty easy for google to find.

Try this:

http://www.fxcomponents.com/a3-audio-player/

(I haven’t used it, just chanced upon it the other day)
