I set my site to 800W x 800D, but it seems awfully small.
Because it is NOT 800 wide!
This page is 550 wide and 550 tall that is why it looks small - it is small.
Generally reckoned that 960 wide is a good starting point these days and as tall as it needs to comfortably take your text content without a lot of scrolling.
Thanks – that was the problem. i did not realize I had to set the master page size – I just assumed it matched the document set=up. Oh well… lots of resizing work to do now.
Just resize the master (and the pages will follow) then it is just a matter of moving stuff around on you actual pages and resizing your pics to suit.
Can I make 1 small suggestion about your navigation - it is fine at the bottom of the page as long as you are sure that it will be seen in all browser window sizes. If you cannot be sure about who and on what they are viewing then move it to the top or LHS where it definitely will be seen.
The other thing to consider is people that increase the size of the text in their browsers - by default the latest version of Safari is set to Zoom the whole page but it and many other browsers can be set to just zoom text.
If you try increasing the size of your text while looking at your site you will see text overlapping graphics etc.
960px is a good jumping off point as Dave has mentioned but it also
depends on the layout and the type/amount of content involved. For
example, I’m re-coding a site for someone and because of the design
requirements they need to adhere to a strict 800x550 dimension (though
the height will expand if pushed); very small by today’s standards but
given the amount of content it works very nicely, anything bigger and
the content would be swimming. Consider the requirements and design
accordingly.
