To control the appearance of the individual elements you need to do some style code editing either in Blogger itself or, the method I use, in TextWrangler before adding it to Blogger. I make changes to some of the existing styles by adjusting background colours, line height, etc and also add the following ( taken from http://news.dmoft.co.uk )
