Cable Modem

I’m looking to buy a cable modem so I can stop paying Comcast (ISP) $8/
mo. to rent theirs. I don’t know anything about them, is there any
appreciable difference between one modem and the next? I just need
something simple that works. Recommendations appreciated.

Check with Big Box Electronic store such as Best Buy.

I would buy the same brand but newer model than what Comcast provided. This is so they can not say it is your off brand modem if a subsequent issue pooped up.

Look very closely on the old modem and the new modem and you will see a 6 digit hexadecimal number in the following format:
01:32:63:9e:b1:a1

(hexadecimal numbers are 0123456789abcdef and in electronics are in 6 two digit numbers called a mac address)

Write down your numbers and call Comcast tech support and tell them you would like to switch modems and the new one is yours so please stop the monthly rental charge.

When you get done Comcast will probably ask you to drop the old modem and power supply off at one of their local offices.

Good luck and break out the magnifying glass in advance as sometimes those hexadecimal numbers are pretty tiny.
