Can scriptaculous achieve this?

I’ve been playing around with this with mixed results; using these tools, is it possible to create something similar to the drop-downs on mouse-over the images at http://www.guardian.co.uk/.
My results to date are certainly not predictable!

Sure. I just did this in about a minute. Draw your picture and put it
where you want it to appear. If you are trying to duplicate the look
of the Guardian, then draw a graphics box over the top quarter of the
image and fill it with a color and put a headline in it.

Directly under that, draw a layer-based HTML box, style it up so your
text will look good, and put your “reveal” text in it. I went all out
with a transparent gray background, white type, and a bit of padding
so the type looks right.

Now click on the picture and apply the Transition FX action to the
picture.

Check the On Trigger checkbox, select Effect: Slide Down, and then in
the Item picker, choose your HTML box. It really helps to name these
things when you create them, otherwise you have a real chore to
figure out which thing you want to slide down. Check the Initially
hidden checkbox and set the trigger to either Click or Mouseover.

That’s it. Preview and click and you’ll see the same effect.

Thanks for this Walter; perhaps you could have a look at

Certainly not as smooth as I’d like!

Hmmm. I see that little “skip” at the end all the time in Safari. I
can’t recall what the trick is to making it work properly. Perhaps if
you wrap it in another DIV and target that outer DIV for the effect,
or wrap it and target the inner DIV.

Maybe try one of the other effects. Fade is quite nice, and doesn’t
cause the element to move so it doesn’t suffer from that issue.

There is a trick to fixing this; I remember reading it somewhere but I can’t find the reference right now. Walter’s suggestion may just do the trick. It’s worth a try.

Is there a comprehensive tutorial or other general info concerning use
of the CSS menu action, apart from what’s in the Freeway 4 manual?
I’m investigating this for use on a new site, and I stress that I’m
not very knowledgeable about CSS.

I have no problem making a basic menu bar with menu and submenu items,
but need help with a few things such as:

  1. How to insert my own background image for the menu bar instead of
Freeway’s plain colour. Does it have to be one that can be tiled
    laterally?
  2. How to make the menu bar taller without creating a space between it
and the first menu item when rolled over.
  3. How to make the first sub-menu item line up exactly with its parent
menu item when rolled over, instead of being positioned one pixel (?)
    higher.
  4. If specifying my own menu item backgrounds, what dimensions should
the specified graphic have? Does it have to be one that can be tiled
    laterally?

Answers to these would help a lot.

Thanks, Steve

I have the latest FW5 Beta and have paid for the release version.

Where do I find the Scriptaculous actions, i.e. what do I have to do
to make them appear in the Actions palette?
Also, where do I find some basic instructions for using them?

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Take a look here:

http://www.softpress.com/products/scriptaculous.php

If you open the Products menu and go to New Freeway 5 Features you
will see instructions for a lot of the new features in Freeway 5.

Thanks, Joe. Since first posting my question I’d found these instructions.

My remaining problem is that I can’t find the scriptaculous in FW5b3. Where are they or what do I have to do to make them show up in the Actions list?

Steve.

Select a layer item and open the Item>Actions menu. They are in there listed as Attention FX, Combo FX, and Sound FX. If you don’t see them go to Edit>Actions and make sure the Application checkbox is ticked.

Thanks for this, Joe. I normally add Actions from the Actions window rather than using the Item > Action menu, and I didn’t realize I had to look in the Blogger Template group to find the Scriptaculous items. Maybe it would be clearer to have a specific Scriptaculous group (folder).

Cheers, Steve.

It seems odd that the menu icon, the menu, and the window palette dont all have the same actions listed. Maybe this was explained why earlier and I missed it.

In Freeway there are four different types of Actions, Folder, Page, Item and Standalone. There are also four different menus that can be used to apply these Actions, in Page (both Page and Folder can be found here), in Item (Item Actions can be applied from here, to the item) and in Insert (where Standalones can be inserted).

The Action palette has a button on it that will let you choose a contextual Action (that is, one that is in context to the thing that is selected, so if the Folder is selected then a Folder Action and so on…) and then finally a Toolbar icon that lets you select a Standalone Action that can be drawn on the page.

Folder Actions generally do something to all pages within the Folder (like the E-Shop Settings will add the necessary Mals settings to the folder and each of your pages that use any Freeway Shop Actions), Page Actions generally do something to the Page they are applied to (like Google Analytics that will add some code to the page), Item Actions generally do something to the item they are applied to (like creating the CSS for the CSS Menus Action) and Standalone Actions are just Actions that do something (like the Current Date Action).

I hope this helps.

Some of these actions although cool… have a somewhat weird unreliable or unintended effect when used. I’ve been experimenting with them a lot, and depending on what the user does, they can be more “unintuitive” than helpful! You almost need to expect the user to react appropriately… Ha!

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. What is it that is causing
confusion? Without knowing we can’t make it better

Hi, Joe –

I love Freeway and I really appreciate how hard you guys work to provide a terrific program. But the “I can’t find the action” issue is one that keeps coming up. I think the solution for future versions is for the “actions” icon in the menu bar to include the sub categories. The actions that aren’t “Live” would be grey. That way 100% of the actions would be be visible in the same exact spot every time, even if they weren’t always active.

Just a thought.

– Jamie
