Can’t set font back to default

Intaglio 2.9.8 (bundle license)
OS 10.4.11 on G4 PPC Mac.

Draw graphics user on Mac OS since early 1987 (mostly AppleWorks 5 and 6 in recent years), yet haven’t mastered Intaglio. I’ve searched this forum, checked Help, and reviewed the Intaglio manual, and have not been able to figure out the answer to the problem.

Problem: Typing new text material in new text boxes results in a stroke being applied. Can cancel the stroke one-by-one for each new text item, but cannot reset the default such that the stroke is not produced.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Select the Text tool and click in the document to set the insertion point.
  2. Type some text. So far, it looks OK.
  3. Click outside the text area where the text was just typed, or click the solid arrow tool.

Expected result: text looks the same as when it was typed.

Actual result: text is “messy bolded”. The Fill window shows that Stroke Closed is selected, whereas it was not selected earlier in the process, nor when there was no selection in the document. I have to click None for the Stroke (and then also reset the text color, which somehow became white).

I cannot figure out how to reset the default so this does not happen.

This was not a problem in this document until i was messing with coloring (not stroking) two lines of text. I applied color (via steps i did not document) with no result, so i kept trying other things to apply color, eventually with success… but every new text item created since then defaults to being stroked, which i do not want and cannot figure out how to reset/clear.

Anyone know the answer? Is this possibly a glitch or bug in this version?

Thanks.

All programs have their quirks and limitations. Intaglio supports the OSX text services, but some special characters (which work in Text Edit) don’t appear in Intaglio !? Apart from this, in v 2.9.8 I’ve never had any problems with text.

Concerning your problem, this works for me:

Go to Preferences>Tools, specify ‘Double-Click Graphic To’ and click the ‘Edit Text’ button. Intaglio doesn’t have text boxes—just double-click anywhere and type. To edit, change the colour or the type size, double-click the cursor to highlight it. It’s easier to make changes to alignment, width of text, etc. if the Text Ruler and Text Palette are open.

By default, Intaglio sets 12pt Geneva, Fill: Standard; Color: black; Stroke: None. If the stroke is changed to Closed, you get what you call messy bolded.

There are various things you can do to make life easier. For example, if you like a particular font and colour combination, drag it into the Library.

Thanks Ian—useful information, appreciated!

As it turns out, between my posting and now, i somehow managed to get a more suitable default to stick. Unfortunately for both myself and anyone else reading this thread, not expecting this to happen, i failed to document my steps and have no real idea exactly which actions in which order rectified my problem.

So… for now, my problem is solved. Should i come across reproducible steps related to this issue, i’ll endeavor to come back to this thread and post.

Unfortunately Intaglio does not support the full OSX text services that includes kerning, leading, and text alignment as can found in the TextEdit application.

Having to use the current Text menu in Intaglio requires additional time and cursor movement to align text. THEN to change the baseline, leading, and kerning you have to go to the Fill, Stoke, and Text palette.

Intaglio’s UI is not well thought out.
