Carousel Was Working, Now it's Not

Hey, Gang –

I’ve been using the Carousel Action on my site for quite some time. Tonight, I went to the Action Forge and downloaded several new actions. I believe one of them was the Protaculous Action, which is somehow related to the Carousel Action. I also downloaded the Vertical Align action.

The problem is, when I went in to create my Carousel effect (which I do weekly), the action looked different. It now had two little panes to modify (Auto-Glide Interval and Effect Duration). That was new.

And now, I can’t seem to get it to work. I’ve done exactly what I’m supposed to do (see instructions below), including duplicating the HTML box and grouping them together. But no dice.

Is anyone else having trouble with this action? I’ve turned off the other actions I added tonight, including “Vertical Align.” Other thoughts?

Here are the instructions for Carousel that I follow:

Carousel:
Instructions

  1. Draw an HTML box the size of your carousel area. Style it how you like, borders, background color, whatever you like.
  2. Either click inside the box and enter inline content, or carefully draw child boxes within the carousel area to design the first pane of your carousel. Add images or type — whatever you like.
  3. Select the HTML box, and duplicate it in place (0,0 offsets). Change the content to create your second pane.
  4. Repeat until you have stacked up all of the panes of your carousel.
  5. Select all of the panes and group them together. With the group selected, apply the Carousel action to the group. Draw your forward and back buttons, or design them in Photoshop. (These controls must be images.) Apply the Carousel Button action to each one, and select which direction you would like it to scroll.
  6. (Optional) Draw tabs to select individual panes directly. Apply the Carousel Tab Action to each one, and choose the layer you would like to show from the picking list of panes. (At this point you may smack your forehead and go back to clean up the layer names, either using the Inspector or the Site panel.)
  7. (Even more optional) Create a single CSS style named ‘active’ and add a border or some other bit of style to set off the currently selected tab from the others. Apply this style to a non-layered element on the pasteboard so that Freeway will publish it.
  8. Select the entire package — the grouped stack of panes, the tabs, and the forward/back buttons — and group them all together. It is not necessary to apply any further Actions to this group.
  9. Repeat as many times as you like, to add additional carousels to the page.

The new Carousel action doesn’t require you to group the different
items together. Instead. apply the Carousel action to the first item
and the Carousel Panel action to the others.

You’ll also find that if one of these actions also happens to be
applied to something nested within one of these constructs then it
won’t work.

As always, thanks, Keith. I’ll give this a try today.

Do you know where there are complete instructions for the new Carousel action? If there aren’t any, it’s cool. But if there are some (like the old instructions I included), it would be great.

Thanks,
Jamie

Excellent. All this worked. Thanks, gang.

One last question – I’m trying to add the Carousel Button action to the panes. In the past, I would create the buttons, apply the Carousel Button action to them, then group them with the rest of the panes.

What are the new instructions for the Carousel Button action? When I added the buttons to the first pane, then applied the Carousel Button action to them this time, they rotated away when pane #1 rolled up.

Any thoughts on fixing that?

Thanks,
Jamie

Nothing needs to be grouped any more. Each button, each tab, and each
pane has a picker on it to identify the Carousel it’s associated with.
Once you choose that (and if you have only one Carousel on your page,
it’s chosen automagically) there’s nothing else to do, structure-wise.

Hmmmm. Interesting. Everything works fine when I test the action as a preview, but when I upload it and make it live, it doesn’t seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jamie

Hold down the Control key and select File / Publish Everything. Do a
full upload. You may have a different version of the glider.js file on
your server.

Walt, you’re a genius. But you knew that already.

That worked great. Thanks!

Hi, Gang. One last question on this thread about Carousel Buttons.

It seems that when I create the Carousel Buttons on my first pane, the buttons scroll with the graphic image in the box. In other words, I’ve put the button graphics outside of the graphic box that has the scrolling image, but the buttons seemed to scroll with the image anyway. I want them to stay put.

I haven’t noodled with this much to see if I can figure this out on my own, but is there a simple solution to this? Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks,
Jamie

If you draw the buttons over the top of the pane, they will become
“children” of that pane unless you take care to do this:

  1. Draw the buttons off to the side – on the pasteboard works fine.
  2. After they’re drawn and wired up with the Action, drag them where
you would like them to appear.

This should allow you to have buttons that overlap the Carousel area
without becoming mired in the effect itself. You only need one set of
buttons per Carousel to control the effect. You can have more if you
like, but they’re not needed.

I am trying to set up Carousel which I love but have a problem.
I am a photographer user of Freeway and currently use Freeway 4 Pro.
Basically, I have successfully created a page of my images with one large frame in the page, BUT I have so many photos that I would like to have several groups with identifying buttons that allowed me to GROUP photographs into separate Carousels - People, Architecture, Travel, Food etc… But visually there would only be one Carousel visible at a time (in exactly the same place on the page)

But how? So far I have successfully created 4 working carousels (in separate groups on top of each other), but only one will work at time, and only the front Carousel, despite having created labelled buttons and/or tabs to call up the different Carousels.

Only the front Carousel works! Any idea what I mat be doing wrong?? Many thanks in advance!

I would recommend that you split this into several pages. The primary
reason is page load. Carousel loads ~300K of JavaScript into the page,
before you add a single photo. Those photos are not preloaded or lazy-
loaded or anything – the entire mess has to download before the
effect will work at all. If you are using this for more than a half-
dozen photos on the page, then pay careful attention to your total
page file size. You might be turning visitors away with that much data.
