Changing Background colour

Hi All,
Sorry folks, basic stuff here, but how do you change a background colour in
InDesign (CS3).
I’m putting together a book cover and dropping a black and white portrait
into its centre, but it prints really dark on a white background, and would
appear somewhat lighter if I changed that background to a deep brown, for
instance. But how to do that?
Ah, that’s the question!
A solution would be much appreciated…
Thanks,
Mark Lang.

From the Tool palette, select either Rectangle frame (F) or Rectangle tool (M), click and drag across the page to your required size, (include bleed if necessary). With this new box selected on the page, make sure in the Swatch palette, you have the Fill icon selected and not the Stroke, and choose Black. If your picture is already Placed on the page, send your new black rectangle to the back (Command+Shift+[ (in CS5 anyway)).

Hi Kryten,
Many thanks for the info on changing the background colour, the black
background looks much better.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers,
Mark.
