Hi everyone,
Client has raised an ugly issue…although, he’s excited about it!
Specifically, he wants a telphone number made into a link which when clicked will call the number (from a mobile phone).
He says he’s seen this done, but I’m thinking…WHOA! this is way over my head!
Can it be done?..with any simplicity?

Try using the “tel” keyword in your href before a phone number
<a href="tel:123456789">dial 123456789</a>
or
<a href="wtai://wp/mc;123456789">dial 123456789</a>
Never tested this personally through.

Remember that any solution will only work if the reader is browsing
from their phone. A Skype number can be set up as a link too, but the
same issue applies; it’ll only work if the visitor has Skype.

Thanks Joe. Unfortunately I don’t have Freeway 5, but in any case need to design for all phones not just iPhone. This is just an emergency number site, really, very little else - the key to it is instant connection from whatever phone is being used to browse…older Nokias and Ericcsons as well as new-fangled jobbies.
Designing for the iPhone might be fun, but strikes me as rather elitist on its own!

Still, it might be worth looking at these stats:
There are far more ‘smartphones’ around than iPhones, but many of
those never get used past MMS.

Interesting stuff, Keith, I must admit.
But as the commenter below the main post points out, this is more about how iPhone users use their iPhones, rather than the number of iPhone users there are!
I think it shows that the iPhone is a great device which encourages browsing etc. But as the commenter mentions, there are twice as many Nokia S60 (alone) users worldwide than iPhone users.
Well, I don’t know where the figures come from, so who’s to say. But it still smacks of designing for a 20% market!

I think what FW5 already does for the iPhone will probably work for most smartphones and is what David described.
Just an FYI for when you or anyone else is using FW5 and needs to know.
