Copying pages from one doc to another

I need to create a bunch of new pages, and it’s going to take a while, during which time I’ll need to update my main file from time to time.

So I’d like to work on a spare copy of my main doc, then move the pages into the main doc when I’m ready.

I know how to create new pages in the main doc and copy content from the copy doc into them page by page, but I’m hoping there’s a quick way to, say, just drag a load of pages from one doc to the other - like you can in powerpoint, for example. I’ve tried a few things but no luck so far.

Anyone know if/how this can be done?

Thanks

You can copy and paste pages from one document to another, but that’s one at a time. Have you already discovered that?

Well I did try that. I tried to copy in one site folder and paste to the other site folder, but nothing happened. I know I can select all the items on a page and paste into a blan page - do it all the time, but I’ll have a lot of pages to copy so I was hoping there might be an easier way.

Thanks Walter

Oh, no, that’s just a waste of time. The Site Folder is not where your pages really live – that’s just (metaphorically) the out-feed tray of your “printer”. Changes made to the Site Folder are overwritten at the very next publish.

To copy from one document to another, open both documents in Freeway side-by-side. Click on the name of the first page you want to duplicate in the sidebar of the donor document. Choose Edit/Copy or Command-C from the keyboard. Switch to the receiving document, and paste. Note that the filename of the page will not be carried over from one document to the other, it will always be the automatic version that Freeway generates from the title, so if you had cleaned up these automated filenames already, you will need to do this again. But everything else will carry over – Actions, content, everything. You will also need to clean up the links from one page to another, as those may be replaced with a static link rather than a normal Freeway “smart” link.

I don’t mean that folder on my desktop - I know that won’t work

“Click on the name of the first page you want to duplicate in the sidebar of the donor document.”

If by sidebar you mean the list on the left with ‘site’ at the top, a Master pages folder and then a site folder below - yes that was my first choice (hence why I said I was copying from the site folder). It didn’t work.

When you say “Switch to the receiving document, and paste.” Where should my cursor be when I paste. I had it in the list on the left where I wanted the page to appear.

Or do you mean the name somewhere else. If so where?

Thanks

On the paste side, you generally don’t need your cursor to be anywhere at all. Just switch to that document and paste. The page will appear in the list, but not necessarily where you expect it to be. (You can drag it to a different location in the site hierarchy later.)

Ah ok that sort of worked. It didn’t copy the page background and put it at the end of the list but i can probably work around that.
