Copyright Link Question?

Hello,
This is a copyright question that I’m a little confused by… I know it could also depend on the country that the server is located but this is a general question based on the ethics of the world web…
Say for example we create a search engine or a simple web page, we allow you to view the latest movies ( In theatres now ) or TV episodes etc. We simply create links to other websites that hold this info.

My thinking is this in general, Sure anyone can be made an example of by a court order but would the rulings win ?.

If you are liable then should Google also be liable ?

OK, this is another example and probably a bad one but I’m thinking out load now,
Say Joe, asked me if he could get any ecstasy.
“No problems Joe just call Henry and he will help you”

Am I still liable with no financial advantage, just helping joe.

Question: Are we still Liable for any copyright issues by suppling links… even if the info or responsibility is not ours… same as Google does but without financial gain ??

I’ve done some research into international copyright law. My opinion is that a link to the source is similar to a footnote or reference in a scholarly article. As long as you don’t copy the source and post it on your site you should be OK.

Keith (of this forum) is an educator in UK and US and may be able to give us more info.
