Custom Brushes?

Hi,

Is it possible to create custom brushes in Intaglio? Specifically, I am looking to use a shape, like a triangle, as a brush. That way, I could draw a line with my graphics tablet that would become an elongated, curvy version of the shape. Does that make sense?

Thanks for any feedback.

I did a little searching through older messages and I realize this may overlap previous threads. I’m still hoping for an answer, though.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Thanks,
Pablosan

Do you mean the sort of stroke effects that can be created in programs such as Illustrator, Expression and Lineform—where a drawn shape is wrapped around a path? As far as I know, Intaglio can’t do this, but it can bind font characters (including dingbats and symbols) to a path.

Some nice effects are possible with CI effects. Draw a triangle and add the Twirl CI effect. A curved shape like a pointed artist’s brush can be created by dragging the sliders. The shape can be changed by choosing a different brush shape in the Path and Text Stroke Brush palette in the menu bar. For yet more effects, move individual points with the Point Selection Tool. If you hold down the Option key with the cursor over a point, the cursor changes to the Path tool and the sharp angle can be made into a curve. The possibilities are endless.

I don’t have a tablet, but ‘cartoon’ shapes can be drawn with the Pencil tool (using the mouse). The stroke can be made wider or colorised and the Smudge CI effect creates a ‘rough’ effect. The brush shape can also be changed as described earlier. If you experiment, you’ll find all sorts of things are possible.

Brushes are currently limited to round and calligraphic shapes. The stroke width of the line determines the size of the brush.

We’re researching more brush options for a future version but haven’t picked anything specific. There are several methods used by various applications for this which can be used to produce different results. For example, Lineform takes a path shape and distorts it to fit your line. Some apps use a pressure sensitive tablet to allow a brush shape to be drawn many times along a path or to vary the stroke thickness of the line.

Thanks for the replies! I am going to play around with the CI approaches IanB mentioned and, if I can find some time, I will try and post a graphic example of exactly what I’m shooting for.

Expression does what I want, but it’s no longer supported since the company got bought by Microsoft… grrrr! The version I have on my Mac still runs, but it is not an Intel app, so I hold my breath with every new update to OS X. I know it’ll break eventually.

Here is my example of a custom brush:

I spent quite a bit of time playing around with CI last night - especially the “Distortion Effects.” While I didn’t find a way to get what I want for my current project, I did have a lot of fun and found several things that I’ll be looking to use in future projects.

The one thing I noticed is that the object ends up outside of it’s selection box, making it difficult to reselect it after deforming it. Is there a way to convert the resulting object to a new path? That way I could also stretch and size the new object. It’s probably there but I haven’t figured it out yet - chalk it up to my n00bness.

Not really. The basic idea of all the effects is to create a bitmap from your vector graphics (using the effects resolution) and apply the filters to that bitmap. Once you’ve done that you can modify the original path, but you can’t convert the filtered bitmap into a path.
