If I had to have email download automaticall AND alert me then I would agree
with you. But I don’t - so I don’t and get it manually when it suits me. SoI
don’t have any sense of intrusion or interruption.
If I did want auto download of email but NOT Freewaytalk I would get a gmail
account and have that pop set not to be in send and receive all - or indeed
leave it in gmail server.
Not saying this to refute or convert - but seemed reasonable points relative
to the experience of having a mail access.

To keep a balance here regarding preferences, I agree with deidrmc in terms of
having a friendly place to go search for information.
I seem to be of the opposite mind to the majority on this thread as I prefer
not to be bothered by continuous email alerts. I would rather choose the time
and place to receive information. A forum, or wiki, or even Google works best
for me when I have a question about something that just requires a search to
find information I need without having to store locally list after list after
list in an email client.
Email is very useful for more or less instant communications, but I don’t rely
on it for all purposes.
chuckamuck gets my concern about constantly having to scan emails, or at least their subject lines, when one takes the email route. i’m on a number of lists where i have filters set to route them. these are lists i need/want to be aware of on a day to day basis. since I’m a less than part-time designer, that’s not how i have used the wealth of information on the freeway forum.
i have bookmarked the RSS feed. sadly, it doesn’t tell me what’s new (unless i don’t recognize the subject line) or if anyone has responded newly to the last post i visited or posted on.
I hope that nobody is still confused about mail, or the need for it here. What Keith was suggesting was a way to alert the poster of a question to a new answer. I think that this is something we will be able to provide. This message would not go to the list, but only to the original poster.
Cant you mark all as read- after viewing those you want to read? Then any
fresh ones should come in unread. (I use an old free version of Netnewswire
lite which can do this).

I use NNW lite too, though Heather speaks glowingly of the for sale
version. I just use a newsreader for scanning purposes. I use Apple
mail for most everything, but specifically use Gmail for “forum”
mails. It is multithreaded, doesn’t eat up any local drive space, and
is wonderfully searchable. Its web based, so I can get to it on the
run if I must.

Simon Aughton does. I still use the free version ;o)
I’ve reverted to email for the lists now. I liked one RSS feed for
the whole forum, so having an individual feed for each topic list was
too much for my befuddled head to handle.
I’m letting the system bed in, and letting Walter and Finlay work
their magic to smooth the rough edges. I have some issues with lists
that refuse to let me subscribe, but I can live with it.
Sorry Heather – don’t know why I thought you’d gone for the full
version… that’s the thing about dementia, though – you are always
the last to find out.

Ahh, revealed at last the TRUE reason we are desperate for Names in
our posts… So I am not the only one here who wears a nametag for his
own benefit, eh?
