I’m giving DO a test run and am setting up my first Droplet. Not sure what Linux distribution to use or what Applications (Redmine, node, LAMP etc.) are useful for a basic, general purpose site. Suggestions?
I would do Ubuntu if it’s your first time on a VPS. If they have a LAMP installer, then do that — it’s everything you’re gonna need for basic Dynamo stuff.

For your own sanity, pick whatever is offering LTS (long term support) versions. You don’t want to migrate from one major version to another in production.

14.10 x64? I assume that’s the most recent (64 bit) version?

Its becoming clear Im probably not a VPS kinda guy, its a bit too propeller-beanie(ish) for me. Perhaps managed VPS is more my speed.
Give it some time - when I first fired up my DO droplet, it felt like I was in way over my head. However, they have pretty good documentation. Also, look into installing Sentora (was zPanel) if you want to have a GUI for site-management.
After a year of using it now, I couldn’t be happier. It’s dirt-cheap, I get to customize my server with Apache modules (Google PageSpeed is spiffy), and once it is set up it’s easy to manage. Just make sure you have automatic backups running.
