I have my domain names registered with the same companies that host my
websites. In the past, I had trouble with one of the hosts not renewing
my registration for a long time, during which time my website was dead.
From that experience, I surmised that they own the domain name I am
using, and there’s not much I can do to assure the use of that domain.
Is this the best arrangement? Can I register my domain with a more
reputable company or other neutral entity?
I wouldn’t assume the domains aren’t in your name without checking or,
if necessary, requesting transfer. I keep mine separate - all at http://www.123reg.co.uk with hosting elsewhere.

With Domain Monster the more names you renew at the same time, or add years to other domains, the cheaper the price.
I went with Hostgator’s “baby plan” which offers unlimited domains, unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth. Any problems I have had were solved very quickly.
