Downloadable PDFs Freeway 5

I have several pdf files I need to link to my site. I have decided to allow the user to choose either download or simply view in an open window.

I am currently using Freeway Pro 5. I came across an old tutorial explaining the steps, however it was explained in Freeway 4 Express…some changes have been made to the new version.

I understand the PDF actions available within 5, which work, what I need is a step by step in tackling the downloadable version which to my understanding requires adding a code within a FTP. I can not locate a .htaccess file. I am using Transmit 4. I tried adding a new file .htaccess, but I receive a server error…

"Could not upload “.htaccess”. “Error accepting data connection. This could be a problem with firewall or proxy configuration. Try passive mode.”

Switched to passive mode and got this…

“Server said: Could not create file. Error -160: could not start data transfer”.

What I am doing wrong? Any ideas?

Thanks much.

The easiest way to create an htaccess file on your server is first of all create the contents as you want them and save the file as plain text and call it htaccess (no leading period)

FTP this file to your site and once it is there then rename with Transmit to .htaccess

You are not allowed to upload .htaccess files.

I can not locate a .htaccess file.

There is a setting within Transmit that allows you to ‘see invisible files’. View Menu>Show Invisible Files - make sure that you have that enabled but remember there may not be one to see!

And you may only need to add this htaccess file to the folder that contains the PDF that you want to be downloadable.
