DTP Applications?

Being first a web designer, I’ve been asked to do some desktop publishing (more on a volunteer basis rather than professional). I’m curious as to what you all recommend for applications. Obviously, I’m looking for something affordable as I won’t be making money using it, but do appreciate good software. I do have a copy of Swift Publisher and iWork.

Depending on the specific project requirements either of those might be perfectly suitable for basic work. Swift Publisher is - for a hobbyist application - quite nice, actually. However, unless you are absolutely dead-set against using Adobe products I would say rent InDesign for a month and add the cost to your fee.

What Todd said - get InDesign from Adobe and add the monthly fee to your bill.

Also, have a look at iStudio Publisher - http://www.istudiopublisher.com/

There’s QuarkXPress, of course (30-day demo available), iCalamus http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22953/icalamus and the open source Scribus http://www.scribus.net/canvas/Scribus. Older versions of InDesign may work OK with current OS (the CS5.5 version is fine with 10.9, for example), although still not cheap.

I thought you could now download CS3 for free from Adobe?

I recall that Abobe switched off the licensing server for CS2 so that if you had a serial number for that version of the suite you could activate it without it being checked. I’m not sure if I’ve seen this for CS3 but I wouldn’t be surprised.

A quick Google provided this article although I’ve no idea if it is still valid (YMMV);

Regards,
Tim.

Thanks all for the feedback! I assumed that there were a lot of options, but just didn’t know where to look first. Time to start taking them for a spin. :slight_smile:
