EE 2 or EE v1.6.9

Can anyone with EE experience guide me?

For a first site with EE 2 or would you develop in EE v1.9.6? using the free core as a starting point. our use EE 2 with the 30 day trial :-/

What I’m meaning is. Is EE 2 a totally different beast, and will v1.9.6 upgrade to 2 later ? (I assume at some point EE v1.9.6 will be gone at some point)

v2 was a bit rough when it was first released (at least it felt that
way to me) and unless cost is a factor I would say v2 is the way to
go. I doubt v1.6 will be going anywhere soon, I get the sense that
Ellis Lab likes to keep things around for awhile, but I could be
wrong. In any case I keep a clean copy of v1.6 just in case I want to
use it again. Truthfully you can’t go wrong with either.

As a matter of fact, I doubt if Ellis Labs just ‘drops’ v 1.6.x Just remember what happened to pMachine. One can still use that dinosaur. In the end they gave it away for free… I’ll stick to 1.6.x untill v 2.x is out for at least one year, and we’ve seen some serious updates.

IIRC when I tried the first release of the v2 demo it did in fact stop
after 30 days. I don’t know if that’s changed. I think this may, in
part, be why v1.6 is still available so people have a free option to
go back to it if they don’t want to pay the new v2 licensing fees.

I think the primary reason 1.6 is still around is that they are still calling 2.0 “beta.”

To address the initial question, my perspective is that 2.0 isn’t that different, at least from the developer’s standpoint. It’s not as different as pMachine was to EE. OTOH, the control panel is very different, and there have been many changes. Yet, you can transfer a lot of your EE1 knowledge over.

Right, I agree with Joe and thee above. My new website uses only ExpressionEngine 2, plus the Multiple Site Manager was a free upgrade from when I used it on my first site. It’s still buggy in a few areas but it’s very production ready in terms of what’s there. There also isn’t a huge learning curve from 1.6, but I think they keep 1.6 around so people don’t complain there isn’t a free trial or a free product like Wordpress.

As Joe said, not a whole lot of changes and the tags are almost identical except weblog now becomes channel but I think everything else I used was the same. Oh, wait the RSS feed started differently, but that wasn’t anything. If anything about EE 2 it’s poorly documented in terms of the modules and they always have them in their most basic sense meaning, for example, I wanted to have my RSS feed pull from two channels rather than just a single one. Well how do you do that? Well you had to Google search it, find out how someone did that in 1.6x, then randomly in the forum one day I found a solution by some random person on what tag needed to be at the top to have it work. (For those wondering, the term ‘assign_variable’ turned into ‘preload_replace’ when assigning two channels as a ‘master_channel_name’).

It’s kind of all over the place, plus a lot of the extensions and plugins are not 2.0 yet and I’m hoping 2.1 hits the fan by the summer and a majority of the kinks are out.

But hey if you buy EE2, as of right now, you get EE1 free. That made sense for a client of mine recently who wanted all the bells and whistles till they found out the pink interface hurt the eyes and isn’t very manly and some of the areas in the CP were not styled. Eeks.
