[Express] Alt tags for Showcase gallery images

I’ve recently built a website on Freeway Express for my cartoons, and have done this by creating a number of thumbnail galleries in Showcase before exporting them to Freeway. I’ve included a caption for each image whilst in Showcase, but I’m not sure about the following:

  1. Whether the captions automatically get converted to image alt tags when exported to Freeway
  2. Whether I need to add a hyphen between words in my captions (to prevent alt tags being generated with all the words stuck together and being unreadable by search engines).
Any help would be much appreciated!

Yes your captions are converted to alt text and make the title too.

Spaces are preserved in the text.

But if you want to post a link to your site online we can look and check for you.

Hi David,

Thanks for the response - much appreciated!

I’ve selected 1px height for the thumbnail captions and 0px height for the large images - this ensures the captions aren’t visible when viewing. Will the captions still be converted to alt text?

My site is paperthin-cartoons.co.uk if you wouldn’t mind checking for me.

Many thanks!

Also just noticed that the pages for my large images in the cartoon galleries are taking a long time to load. Do you know if this is down to the size of the large images (currently up to 730 px), and if so, if I reduce the image size will I get quicker page loads?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Yes this is entirely because of the size of these files - the rock cartoon pics are 3/4 Mb which is HUGE for this sort of image. 1st thing I would do is make them jpeg and not png. A png is a much larger file size.

And once you have them as jpegs you can adjust the compression to get them even smaller.

Thanks David - have saved my images as JPEGs at 75% quality. Do you know how I could check the individual image sizes on the site to make sure they’re still not too big?

You can easily use the finder to select individual files in the Resources folder and see how big they are (after publish)

Have you pre-processed your images using Pshop or similar?

If so then you can determine the file size there.

Does the simple site search function in Pro read image alt tags in a thumbnail gallery page generated from Showcase?

I’d like a site search to turn up the thumbnail gallery page when ever any words contained in the captions or alt image text from any of the thumbnail images is entered.
