Are animated gif’s compatible in Freeway 5 Express, I’ve imported a few and all I get are broken horizontal lines.

As far as I know, yes they are. Are you layering them over the top of
any other elements, by any chance? One thing to try is to import them
as “pass-through” elements, which will keep Freeway from re-rendering
them. But Freeway will re-render an animated GIF such that it still
renders. That was one of my favorite demo tricks – overlay a
transparent PNG, an animated GIF and a JPEG, press Preview, and it all
Just Works™.
