[Express] Difference between Freeway & RapidWeaver ???

Hello

I have been using RapidWeaver for a couple of years with success but are disappointed with the total lack of documentation in their upgrade among other things. Not trying to start a war on which is better. I have a few questions if someone could answer to help me make a decision.

  1. What are the main differences between the two from a novice’s standpoint.

  2. How complete is Freeway’s documentation, and will I have to look elsewhere for answers?

  3. Is Freeway complete right out of the box or does one need to get add ons?

Hello Phil,

I don’t know very much about Rapidweaver but I have researched a lot before taking a decision between both. I’ve been using Freeway Pro for a couple of months now and I am very pleased with it. It’s a very complete and robust software. You can practically obtain the same results if you were using Dreamweaver with no need to know codes.

There’s plenty documentation, manuals etc and the only add ons you need are called actions you have to install, but to se with Freeway. I don’t have the (Express) version but still think it’s better than Rapdiweaver. You can look for reviews and you will find it too.

Best,

Marcus

Hello Marcus

I have downloaded the trial version and will be having a go at over the next few days.

Another question I have: One of our web sites we use to sell through e-junkie and was wondering if how much problem I will have converting between the 2.

Thanks
Phil

Freeway Docs are pretty good. But you will undoubtedly find yourself adding actions… and the whole action documentation process is pretty bad. Some folks ship documentation with their actions but many do not.

And IIRC even some of FW’s own built in actions are poorly or non-existently documented. And while ActionsForge is doing an admirable job in making the lookup of actions easier, many there are not documented.

And for the ones that do come with useful documentation, it is a pain to have to go looking for it when you need it. I really think Freeway needs to add documentation support within the action interface to better manage this, but to be fair, I don’t thing plugins for other tools address this either.

Do you mean converting the Rapidweaver website into a Freeway? I don’t know very much about it but I think it would be easier redo it.

I think maybe DeltaDave or Walter who are members of this forum and could answer you that much better than me. They know a lot about not just Freeway but almost everything about web in general.

best,

Marcus

Considering that Rapidweaver is entirely template based, converting your site into Freeway would be a complete re-do process. Meaning that you would have to take the files outputted by Rapidweaver and rebuild the site in Freeway itself. It might seem a daunting task, however it is easy to do since you already have most of the materials made for you and Freeway is easy to work with.

I’d encourage you to watch the tutorial videos found on the Softpress site (http://www.softpress.com/support/usingfreeway/) and I do sell (with a few free one’s) Freeway (Pro version) ScreenCasts on how to do lots of things in Freeway, so click the link in the yellow box below this post to see if I have anything that would help.

Best of luck and make sure to post questions if you have them on FreewayTalk as I’m sure there are more folks than just Dave and Waltd who could answer your questions.

What are the main differences between the two from a novice’s standpoint.

Cant answer that one as I am neither an Express or RapidWeaver user.

How complete is Freeway’s documentation, and will I have to look elsewhere for answers?

FW has some pretty good pdf documentation but as others have suggested there are areas (actions) that are a bit light on explanation. This is partly because a lot of actions are written by FW users and not SoftPress themselves - usually to deal with an issue or enhance an area where that user has seen a need.

Is Freeway complete right out of the box or does one need to get add ons?

It is complete out the box but said Actions are available when circumstances arise eg there actions for Joomla and Expression Engine integration that are probably not required by Joe Average FW user.

Have a look at http://www.actionsforge.com to give you some idea of what is available over and above FW’s core actions.

A lot are free but some like Max’s WebYep integration actions and Mike’s easiCaptcha have a cost attached as these do require a lot of development time - and well worth the money too.

But one of FW’s biggest resources is right here where, due to the global nature of FWT, there are folk 24/7 that are willing to help out when you get stuck or just have one of those ‘stupid’ questions. And we all know that the only Stupid Question is the one that isn’t asked.
