Can anyone give me some insight into how eBooks (PDF) work in terms of securely hosting them and making them available for automatic download after payment?
I set up a demo template store with one downloadable good, in this case a .zip. As far as I can see, ECWID does a good job in handling downloads (500MB in the free version).
OK - should rethink about language settings, but it is as far as I remember it’s not necessary to “sign in”. An eMail Adress should be enough.
But thanks for the input anyway - very valuable in order to get more experience cause I really think that ECWID is handsome compact … and I do not have anything to sell - what a pitty.

@Dave: The main reason you couldn’t get any further eMail is that ECWID quoted your order as spam. The main reason for this is, that your Customer details doesn’t fit to what ECWID expects:
(and the answer to Paul aswell)
ECWID grabs your IP in order to refer your location (as near as possible) including the possibility to clarify with the bottom button and of course with the check out.
Dave entered as his location the “United States” that doesn’t fit to his IP. Further more he entered some cryptic name and address (JJJK HHGF) that forces ECWID to verify your eMail (or to let you log in) to double check if you are physical person or a spammer.
Paul, late last night I haven’t proper understood what you meant, I hope this is clarifying it. I really like to understand as much as possible round about ECWID, so all testing sceneries are welcome.

Thanks Thomas; I was a bit concerned from a privacy point of view, as I hadn’t given the site any information about me at all … but I guess anyone can snag my IP address.
yes Paul - regarding Google Analytics I’d say very similar mechanism (and btw. those who are seeking for the illegal downloaders use this way as well).
But please keep in mind: It is just a “local” thing that ECWID grabs your IP and displaying it for you.
The main reason they did is for shipment and taxes. Assumed you’re selling stuff into different regions of a country (or the world), all have different tax rules or shipping costs, it’s more then helpful to determine what would be the charged to you and all this before you purchase (… or walk the checkout steps through … or read a long “terms of use and shipment”).
