[Express] header and footer which reman the same on all pages - quicker to load??

Hi all,

As a freeway novice I can design individual whole pages that link together to make a site. the base images are designed in photoshop, and at the moment i can import the design for each of the pages as one big jpeg from photoshop. trouble is that for this to load on every internet page will take forever. especially now I’ve added rollovers for the buttons.

I dont want the ‘whole’ page to download each and every time i click a new button. The header (containing the rollover buttons ive created) and footer remain the same throught the site. because of this I want them only to have to load once, and not on each and every page which would slow the site down terribley. Only the middle section need change. I want header, middle viewing area and footer to remain fixed width/ height.

Does freeway do this automatically from the master page? if not do you know what I look for in the instruction manual? From what ive seen Frames look like they could work for the downloading quickly part, but it says the header will always be seen on screen, which I don’t want. I want to be able to scroll down normally.

If you can point me in he right direction that would be great.

many thanks

Daryl

Can you post a link to what you have just now so we can better see what you are trying to achieve.

Hi Martin,

if I got you right - it is a point of preparing your design in ps and in freeway.

The way I do is to really plan header,(css-menu-area) content, and footer area and each of them are situated in its different html objects (divs). Apart of fact that I do “inline content” to get the most advantages of building a site (e.g. stretch content all over the screen) you need to seperate your PS into those pieces as well.

One result actual is:

Each area (horizontal) has separate images (mostly bg-images) sliced out of the ps-design - mainly as high as the parent div and about 10px wide to tile horizontal, to keep the file size low.

Another very good example on how to design (and to investigate what’s going on) is Joe Billings Flexi that covers basically as well what I mean. It can be found here:

http://users.softpress.com/joe/flexi/

To look the structure of a FW-doc I recommend to activate the “element-view” via left bottom symbol.

Hope it could be a start - and don’t forget David’s call to try to show us something (even it is just a screenshot published somewhere) to have a look on.

Cheers

Thomas

Hi Thomas - that is an excellent implementation of a Carousel - it makes shower fittings look sexy!

I want to buy some now!

no problem my best - I would offer you best price as possible :-). But you need to post an image of the ready built shower enclosure (… if taken “in use” I’d prefer a woman having a shower).

thanks for your replies fellas

I’m a complete novice when it comes to web design, although we’re a design consultancy we specialise in design for print. this new fangled web thingy takes some getting used to ha ha…

I’m trying to upload what I’ve done at the moment (which isn’t much) I’ll post a link as soon as I have it.

btw that carousel (I take it thats what you call the image that moves from left to right at the top) looks really cool.

Is carousel available in freeway/showcase?

As you can see I haven’t get a clue ha ha… its like learning quark express and photoshop all over again… but at least freeway looks more user friendly than dreamweaver

Thanks Daryl

(Martin is the surname of my business partner btw and I’m the Jones part)

its like learning quark express

That is what drew me to FW in the first place. I also was print based with Quark experience and a lot of the keyboard shortcuts etc. were shared with Quark which made the transition easier.

Nowadays I hardly touch Quark so I am not sure how/if they have diverged.

As for DW - its a bit like a different language!

Carousel is relatively easy to implement in FW - just hop over to http://www.actionsforge.com/actions/view/205-protaculous-item and pick up the Protaculous action and then holler if/when you get stuck.

But Thomas’s example is a particularly good one.
